Iceland's Prime Minister Geir Haarde was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He made the announcement at a press conference the day he resigned on January 23, 2009. He said that he had a malignant growth in his esophagus and that he would undergo a procedure to have it removed.
He said: "I am optimistic that I will overcome this disease
and am told that the prospects for recovery are very good. Therefore, I
can expect to a full return to work in the coming months at the
soonest. However, one cannot rule out that this matter may make a turn
for the worse in the long term."
