Ralph Waldo Ellison was a black novelist, scholar and a critic. He is famous for his first novel, Invisible Man, published in 1952 and winning him the National Book Award in 1953. Unfortunately, this is the only novel he got published in his lifetime.
His other authored books were published posthumously: They are:
1. Shadow and Act (1964)
2. Going to the Territory (1986).
3. Flying Home: And Other Stories in 1996.
4. Juneteenth (1999).
5. Three Days Before the Shooting (2010)
In his book, Invisible Man, the invisible man is the narrator himself. The book is about the search of identity of African-Americans in the early 20th Century. Black Nationalism and other social and intellectual subjects regarding blacks are touched upon in this book.
His book has been ranked 19th out of 100 best English-language books of the 20th Century by Modern Library.
