What mythological creatures originated in the US?

Transylvania has Dracula, West Africa has zombies, Scandinavia has trolls, England has gremlins... but what is supposed to be on this side of the pond?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The first thing that comes to mind id Bigfoot, alternately known as Sasquatch, a large ape-man creature purported to live in the Pacific northwest. There have been footprints (the first photographed in 1958), one particular video (posted below) and numerous reported sitings. Most scientists believe it is myth, folklore or hoax. Whatever it is, there has been constant interest for many years.

Because the US is relatively young we don't have a ton of folklore dealing with creatures... but we can borrow from Native American tribes. I can think of 2 that are mainstream enough to garner recognition.

The first is pretty obvious: Sasquatch or Big Foot.

The second is a bit more subtle: Wendigo. Wendigo is an Algonquin myth about men who would eat the flesh of other men and become powerful because of it. The concept of a Wendigo was borrowed by Marvel Comics as a villian who commonly fights Wolverine or the Hulk. This myth was also used as a major plot device in the movie Ravenous.

One last thought about mythological creatures... depending on how you look at it, you might call those big headed big eyed aliens "from" Area 51 a US creation... though fairly new, it's really taken a place in pop culture.
