What movie should I rent tonight? Looking for something in the scifi space.... thought provoking, etc.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Oh, and Linklater's "Scanner Darkly" is quite thought-provoking, beautifully animated and super-trippy. "Donnie Darko" also brilliantly toes the line between comedy, sci-fi, horror and coming-of-age drama. "Dark City" is just a brilliant film, picking up future noir where "Blade Runner" left off. Like "The Matrix," only better.

If you'd like something older, Godard's "Alphaville" is one of my favorites.

M$I'd go for the Tarkovsky "Solaris" over the Soderbergh. Soderbergh's version isn't bad, per se, but it feels a bit more on the nose. The icy remove that makes the original so involving and other-worldly feels like more of a pretense in the remake. And I think George Clooney is under-playing to the point of getting lost. He's not being subtle; he's just not really bothering to act. "Stalker" is also highly weird and brilliant.
