Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Everyones first thought is that people who do this just want attention.
Obviously, there must be more to it for this woman to permanently scar herself forever.

Bethany Storro could be most likely suffering from Munchausen Syndrome.
Dr. Marc Feldman has a good description of this ailment on his site.

~quote

"People with factitious disorder and Munchausen syndrome feign, exaggerate, or actually self-induce illnesses. Their aim? To assume the status of “patient,” and thereby to win attention, nurturance, and lenience from professionals or nonprofessionals that they feel unable to obtain in any other way."

"In some cases, the fabrication or induction of illness is an expression of jealousy, rage, or the desire to control others."

~end/quote

I'm sure that there are many within the mental health fields that study the many types of self mutilation. From the high school girls that cut themselves so that they 'feel' something... to Bethany Storro types who have such a such a deformed self image that even acid can't harm them.

I only know of one other acid attack that was suspected of being a 'copycat' to the Bethany Storro case.

But I don't think this woman self inflicted hers too.

There seems to be more attacks using acid these days in the news. It seems to be the main weapon used on disobedient women from Afghanistan, Iran all the way to Pakistan.

I personally hope to see less of these attacks... whether they are self inflicted or not.

I once worked at a youth shelter for trouble kids. Sometimes we had kids who did stuff like make little cuts on their bodies with knives or pieces of glass. Almost without exception, these kids did not like themselves. There were a variety of reasons for this dislike, but these reasons usually led back to something in their families. There is a lot of truth in the way that the movie" Forrest Gump" portrayed Jenny.
