They had a tie-in with M.A.C. cosmetics, and used their Blot Powder/Pressed in Light to make the vampires (and indeed Bella) look pale and interesting.
(And don't tell anyone, but they also had lola VFX on the payroll, a special effects company that specialise in digitally retouching film to make people look better. Of course, since the vampires in the film are supposed to have perfect complexions, I guess for this film at least it's justified!)
