What law, exactly, was broken by the persons unknown who made off with the controversial cross in the Mojave desert?
The cross was located on government property; but, it was neither built nor maintained by the government. Nor was it the original put there by the VFW in the 30's, rather it was a replacement of sorts put there by an individual in the 1990's. Being about a dozen feet of metal pipe in two or more pieces, it had an intrinsic value of perhaps a couple of dollars.
It might have been a crime, but is it? If one person sticks something on Federal government land without having been asked, and another person removes it, also without having been asked, has a crime been committed?
