Although slow cookers have gained popularity with cooks over the past years, the dutch oven has a special place in the kitchen and can be used to cook a variety of foods. You can use your dutch oven to roast, simmer, stew, fry and boil all kinds of meats, poultry, fish and vegetables. You can even use your dutch oven to bake breads and delicious cakes, cobblers and other dessert items.

A dutch oven is a large cast-iron cooking pot that has a tightly sealed lid and a handle. It's been used for centuries to cook foods. It was originally used in Europe during the late 17th century and was hung by the handle over the fire in a fireplace. The American colonists built their dutch ovens with legs on them so they could place them above the coals to cook their meals.

These days there are two types of dutch ovens, indoor and outdoor ovens. The outdoor dutch ovens are used mainly for camping. Indoor dutch ovens are often made of aluminium and are can be used on the cook top or in the oven.
