Jonslinger, this, I will answer for you, and then some. German is a west Germanic Language. It is one of the world's major languages and the most widely spoken first language in the European Union. The history of the language begins with the High German consonant shift during the migration period, seperating Old High German dialects from Old Saxon. The earliest testimonies of Old High German date back to the 6th century A.D. Until about the year 1800, standard German was only a written language. In the year 1901, a conference, called The 2nd Orthographical, completed a standardization of the
German Language, which would pretty much be what the German language of today is. The standard German of today is what is used. But of course, as with many other languages, there are people and tribes that still use to an extent, the old dialects of the same German Language.
