What kind of fish can be in the same tank as a Betta?

My boyfriend and I bought a Betta, a female and we keep getting different stories. Walmart says they cannot be tanked with any other fish. Petco says only with Tetras, and PetSmart says pretty much any fish can be tanked with it.

So I am curious which is true. Are there certain fish that can go with a male or female Betta. Is it better to have a female when wanting to build a fish community?

Anything helps! Thanks.

I have had a few Beta's in my time. It depends on the sex and temperment of the fish. For example, i stumbled upon a person who couldnt put anything in his 10 gallon tank with his beta as it was s agressive. On the other hand, i have seen betas in tanks living in harmony (?) with guppies. No attacks in four months. My advice is get to know the fish, maybe test it out by adding new fish slowly. I am almost positive that if they encounter another beta is battle-time, so avoid anything that resembles a beta. Thats a definite no-no.

I read some replies on a cute little fish forum. It may be of assistance to you!

It kind of all depends on the size of your tank. Something like a 5 gallon tank, you'd only want something like snail, shrimp, or maybe a pleco.

A 10 gallon tank probably the same---but may be able to get away with a couple small catfish (corydora)

Good luck!
