What kind of dresses look best on a petite (short) woman?

This year it seems like Maxi dresses are very popular. I have a wedding to go to this summer, but at 5'3", I'm afraid that the trendy Maxi dresses will be too long for my frame and I'll end up looking frumpy. What style summer dresses work best for a petite woman?
Tip for best answer: M$0.55

I feel for you Joyann. I am just above the official petite height so I can never find anything that fits just right in the arms or the legs when I pick petite or regular sizing.

I did find this article about how to buy a petite maxi dress and have it fit properly.

So you might want to follow the guidelines and at lest try one on.

I found another article that would be great to print out and take along with you when you go dress shopping.

You may already know these tips, but it might help!

My first thought for a site to check out is Ann Taylor. They make the best petite clothes. I swear by them.
Here's a page of petite summer dresses.

Again... here's a link for picking out the best petite cocktail dress with some links to some great stores online.

Thanks! Not going to answer, just get info from you. I am 5'0" and I live in long dresses during the warmer months. Lessee here. What is it we're supposed to do? Avoid horizontal stripes or something like that? I forget.

Here is a guide on how to look for the best summer dress for petite women:

1. A simple sheath dress would be perfect for petite women and it should hit just right at the ankle. You can wear it with or without a skinny belt for this would look long and lean, be sure to wear a pair of heels with this.

2. Dresses that are gathered just below the bust line like the Empire dresses would look great as long as the dress is not full at hips longer than the knee. It is important for petite dresses that you won't be cut in half at the waist.

3. When putting on belt on your dress try placing the belt or sash above or below the natural waist so as not to cut your body into two part. This will create an effect of a longer top or bottom half which will lengthen your silhouette and keeps you balanced.

4. Petite dress length should be at knee or above the knee for the best look.

5. Try V-necks to create a longer top half of of the body. Vertical darts or piping will also help lengthen your overall shape and appearance.

6. Best for petite's is monochromatic dressing. Your hose, belt and shoes should be in the same hues or color to create the best effect. Wear your dress with heel for even the smallest heel will give a little height to your legs.

You can see photos of these dresses at http://www1.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi24447&rootCategory=cat70010&catId=cat80018&sortKey=Default&section=Regular&conceptIdUnderSale=cat70010
