M$If you have children, extra care should be exercised when selecting a breed, you will need an animal who is gentle and good natured. Also, it should be made very clear to children that dogs have rights and are not playthings to be pulled around.
If you are working, a large noisy dog will not make you popular with the neighbors and the amount of walking a large dog needs will also make it unpractical to keep one.
This would also apply if you live in an apartment.
Smaller breeds can adapt to houses or apartment living, do not need so much exercise and cost less to feed, cost is another thing to be considered.
If you would like to write again, describing your circumstances, I could probably be more helpful as to which breed would be suitable, but without any information it is impossible to recommend a breed for you.

M$Like what @enigmatic1500 said, choosing a breed or type of dog depends on your lifestyle and daily living. It also depends on the type of family you have. There are some dogs out there which may not be ideal if you have young children at home or if you have other pets like cats or other dogs.
There are other lots of things and factors aside from the ones I already mentioned that you should consider before picking a pet.
1. How much space do you have at home or yard where your dog will probably spend time? Larger dogs required larger space. Dogs go insane at times when they're in a small space where they can't run. This could end up to your dog destroying some things by accident. Also, since dogs wag their tails a lot, they could hit some things due to small space.
2. How much time do you have to attend to your dogs? Some dogs require attention and some has to be taken on long walks or jogging.
3. Do you have allergies on fur? If you have, then you might have a problem cause dogs especially those who have short hair shreds hair a lot.
4. How much money are you willing to spend on your dogs daily and medical needs? Dogs like children need vaccines, grooming needs (especially the long-haired ones), and of course nutritious food to sustain them everyday. Bigger dogs have bigger needs so you must consider this factor as well.
To help you, there are quizzes online that could help you choose on which dog you should get depending on the life you're living. Here are some sites you could check...

You can also adopt dogs through animal sanctuaries and facilities and from there, you can inquire on which dog suits you. They have volunteers and workers that could help you pick the right dog for you and your family. Try checking your city for animal shelters where you can adopt your pet. Aside from having a great companion, you've also made one dog happy 'cause you've given him a forever home. :)
