What kind of chew toys are best for dogs?

I know that dogs love to chew on things, so many dog owners buy different kinds of chew toys. However, it seems to me that some things might not be safe for a dog to chew on, particularly if they chew off and ingest small parts of the toy. Are some kinds of chew toys better than others for dogs? Does it depend on the size or breed of dog? Are edible items such as chewing bones better to use? How can I determine the best kind of chew toy for dogs?

These are some tips to help you choose the safest and best dog chew toys:

1. It should have features like: large enough that dog can't swallow, safe, durable, easy to clean and wash and guaranteed.

2. Ideal choices for dog chew toy are durable rubber toys like Nylabone and Kong brands. These are considered safe, durable and come in different sizes and shapes. They can also be loaded with treats which will keep the dog busy for hours.

These are shopping tips for Dog Chew Toys:
1. Avoid buying dog chew toys with strings, buttons, small parts or loose fabric. Stuffed toys and rope toys are not ideal for them because dogs can chew through them and can swallow or chew parts off like the eyes causing a life threatening intestinal obstruction or a choking hazard.

2. Avoid using bones for dog chew toy. They don't break down easily and the dog may have to pass them through his stool causing constipation and impaction.

3. Don't buy too many dog chew toys. Just enough to distract the dog from chewing your furniture, shoes and other things.

4. Dog who are chewing should be appropriately supervised to make dogs toys as safe as possible.

5. Change dog chew toys regularly to keep your dog "interested".

For edible chews, I usually give my dogs rawhides, pig ears, hooves, or bully sticks. The best non-edible chews are the original Kong toys. I get the black ones (for extra strong chewers) and fill them with banana and freeze it. My dogs get them when I am leaving for a while. It keeps them busy and they have never been able to take chunks out of them (although they have taken chunks out of the weaker, red Kongs).
