To start with, there's The Art Institute of Chicago which "houses more than 300,000 works of art". Admission is $18, which isn't exactly cheap, but there's a lot to see and a lot of their exhibits look very impressive.
There's also the Museum of Contemporary Art which is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the country. They charge $12 admission.
