What items should I include on a responsibility chart for a 3-year-old?

I want to create a responsibility chart that will help minimize whining and start teaching my son responsibility. Should I have one chart per day or per week? What items should be included? It is good to tie the chart to monetary rewards? Is there a place online that has free charts to download and print?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Responsibility charts can be a good way to help kids to learn their chores and feel good about accomplishing them on their own. Three year olds can certainly learn how to pick up their toys, put away some of their clothes and help set the table. You can also include behaviors that you want the child to display, such as playing nicely and showing manners. However, I wouldn't tie chores to monetary rewards, especially at such a young age. To me, allowances are something for older children to earn by doing additional chores around the home, not the necessary things they need to learn anyway.

One website that has free preschool chore charts is chorecharts.net. There is a free predesigned chart available for download and a customizable chart you can print for $5.

Children around the age of three are eager to begin helping around the house. While being individually responsible for completing tasks may be too much at this developmental stage, they are generally happy helpers. Helping to do housework and other tasks also is important developmentally for young children and is beneficial to their fine and gross motor skills.

If you are interested in recording and rewarding the tasks that they do cooperatively in the home, a responsibility chart is a great idea. Most children are visual and seeing progress toward a (short term for this age group) goal is very motivating.

Appropriate tasks for these toddlers to help parents or caretakers with include; picking up toys, folding laundry, feeding pets, sweeping, dusting, wiping up spills.

As children grow older, more independent tasks will be able to be included on the chart.

Good luck.
