What is your "Top 5" MVP ballot for this year?

Tip for best answer: M$0.75

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My top 5 shakes out like this:
Lebron James
Kevin Durant
Kobe Bryant
Deron Williams
Carmelo Anthony

I don’t think there’s much argument that Lebron is the best all around player in the NBA. It’s possible that when all is said and done that he really will surpass Michael Jordan as the best all time. Lebron’s numbers are impressive because he’s almost averaging a triple-double every game and his supporting cast is also MJ like in that it really isn’t all that impressive.

Kevin Durant led a team that was one of the worst in the league a year ago, and got them to the playoffs. He was also the only guy in the league who averaged over 30 points a game.

Kobe is Kobe. He’s a heck of a scorer and is leading his Lakers deep into the playoffs yet again. It shouldn’t really be a surprise that he’s on this list.

Deron Williams is kind of my dark horse candidate. He averaged over 18 points a game, while dishing out just over 10 assists per game as well. Lots of people love Steve Nash, Deron basically does the same things Nash does, and actually scored a bit more this season.

Carmelo couldn’t get his team past the first round of the playoffs, but his numbers were of the usual eye-popping variety.

Here are my choices…
1. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers – the Lakers was consistent in the regular season because of his offensive skills, leadership on the court and experience that continues to provide the lift the Lakers needed.
2. Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder – helped his team, which is considered a minnow in the league into an instant playoffs contender.
3. Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics – The go to guy of the Celtics and continues to provide the balance in the team although he is in the company of great players in Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and even Rajon Rondo.
4. Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic – Howard is again a legitimate title contender this year and his leadership and defensive skills gave the team’s boost in the regular season.
5. Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns – Nash was the heart of the Sun’s offensive and even defensive game. His court leadership had helped his team become strong playoffs contenders for many years already.

The 2010 National Basketball Association has been an interesting one. To be an MVP, you should make a positive MAJOR impact difference to your team. The five players I have selected have all done so to varying degrees. In some cases the impact is greater because of having a lesser supporting cast. From low to high my list includes:
05 - Kobe Bryant - No doubt a great player, but with the best supporting cast in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers arguably have the best front line in all of Basketball. Taking that into account and also the talent of their other players, Bryant's positive impact on the team is not as high as his rivals for MVP.
04 - Dwight Howard - Orlando Magic - On many nights he is asked to carry the load for a team that is still looking to add key players. His drawback is that he does not have range as a shooter and depends on his point guard and rebounding to pick up points. His free throw shooting also need improving, otherwise I would rate him higher.
03 - LeBron James - Cleveland Cavaliers - All round the best player in the NBA, but not the MVP based on my standards. His team would still be a winner with him, but he makes them a Championship contender.
02 - Dwayne Wade - Miami Heat - Where would they be without him? - Enough Said.
01 - Kevin Durant - OKC Thunder - Great scorer and improving defender. Like Wade, where would his team be without him? In my opinion he deserved the honor to be named MVP, by taking a sub .500 team into the 50 win circle and the Playoffs.
