What is on your summer reading list?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1. "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith. I am trying to find out if there was a kind of parallel between the rapid settlement on European immigrants in the U.S , to the rapid populating of young cities in Africa like Nairobi and the impact of poverty in both.

2. Definitely Barbara Kingsolver's "Prodigal Summer". I read the Poisonwood Bible recommended by Oprah and it took me back to Africa and I saw Africa as freshly as I had never seen it, never mind that I was born there. She nailed it.

3. "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. I am also looking into the poor of China and pre-revolutionary China. What was China before the Red Beijing Games?
Pearl S. Buck won a Noble Peace Prize for his work. I wonder why??

Lots of creative nonfiction, because that's what I most enjoy writing. I'm accumulating a pile of books to read over the summer, and they include:

Poker Face - a book by Howard Lederer and Annie Duke's sister. (They're pro poker players, for anyone who doesn't know.)

Wiseguys - a memoir about the Mafia.

Re-reading some David Sedaris works, because he's one of my very-favorite essayists.

I've also acquired "Rivethead," which is written by a man who used to work on an assembly line.

You can check out Paperbackswapcom to trade used books all over the United States. That's how I've acquired pretty much everything on my summer-reading list, and it's saved me TONS of money that I would have otherwise had to spend at Half Price Books or Amazon's Marketplace.
