What is your first impression about the BARNRAISING contest so far?
You can find the tasks here:

You can find more information about the contest here:

My questions:
- What's your first impression about the BARNRAISING contest?
- How many tasks have you completed so far?
- Are you going to claim tasks that involve researching ADULT websites?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

To address your second question, I believe that I have only completed three or four tasks throughout my entire time on the website. For a definitive answer, just check out my profile.
Lastly, I have no interest in claiming tasks that deal with nudity, pornography, or the like. First off, Im 17. Secondly, porn is a bad addiction. I'd rather avoid it and get money via other means. Hope I helped!

M$I'm not very enthused about it, to be honest. Not only is the barnraising topic dull as dishwater, but I know I don't stand a chance. Even if I really tried, I always know that there will be somebody on this site who has 24 hours a day to devote to just completing tasks. There's always someone like that on every site! So I just don't want to bother busting my butt to come in 1,000th.
I wish there was some kind of alternate prize for the non-obsessed. The $2 is nice, but I'd rather earn M$ with questions and tasks I'm interested in.
2. How many tasks have you completed so far?
One.
3. Are you going to claim tasks that involve researching ADULT websites?
No. But not based on moral standards. I'm very comfortable with sexuality. But I'm not familiar with the sites, and I don't want to risk getting computer viruses in my research attempts about them. And again, don't know that it's worth my time.

M$Thanks for the good feedback, gno. While we encourage everyone to keep plugging away, we would love to hear everyone's thoughts on a new topic for the next Barnraising contests. Check out our thread here.
Excellent, thanks for the link @danielle! Just so you know, I do hope a lot of people get really into this Barn Raising, and I'm cheering on the winner. I just wish I was a contendah!
However, one thing I'd like to stress is that the goal of this competition is two-fold:
(1) To get introduce people to Mahalo Tasks by offering a big prize
(2) To get pages built for Mahalo that we really need for the site
I understand this may not be the most interesting topic for most people, but the fact is, this is the sub-set of Mahalo pages that all of us here agreed was most needed. It would be great to post Tasks about old movies or historical figures, or other topics that a wide variety of users found interesting...but we have a lot of these pages already, and the ones we don't have are not hot search terms.
As well, we understand that not everyone will want to write Tasks about adult websites. This is why we put disclaimers on all of these tasks, and made sure to include a lot of sites that were appropriate for all audiences in the competition as well. I don't think not working on adult sites puts anyone at a disadvantage as far as the competition goes.
Finally, as for the comments that the contest is labor intensive...I wouldn't disagree with that assertion. That's why we're giving away 350 Mahalo Dollars total in prize money, and 2 Mahalo Dollars for each task completed, regardless of how you end up performing in the contest. This is not a "giveaway." It's compensation for completing a somewhat challenging assignment, which is really what Mahalo is all about. In Answers, we want people to be compensated for the difficult task of finding answers to other user's questions...Tasks is just a different take on a similar idea.

M$I think it's logical to use tasks to encourage people to build pages that are needed and perhaps would not get built or maintained otherwise.
You may need to experiment with the level of compensation and with maybe offering the tasks in more bite-size pieces.
Interestingly it looks like everyone seems to think they're not going to win the prize money. They can't all be right. :)
Perhaps it'll be more of an incentive in future, after we find out just how many tasks it might take to win.
@lon, unlike others, I couldn't agree more about the prize money. I thought it was an interesting addition to the money and point earned per task.
But maybe I'm missing part of the big picture in the selection of the first topic. And I really do like the new format of creating pages and assistance in putting things together.
And no adult websites for me - as mentioned above, concerns about what may appear when attempting to research, as well as a feeling that Mahalo has plenty of other great topic areas where it could prove useful that it seems a cheap way out to focus on adult content.

M$From Mahalo's point of view, the prize money is a dangling carrot and will work great to get certain people motivated. If I were focusing on the tasks, I wouldn't worry or care about the 3 prizes. I would just see it as a possible bonus and not be fixated on that one goal.
I was surprised about the amount of porn sites, but then it dawned on me. From a business standpoint, sex makes the world go round, and I truly believe that we wouldn't be here (on Mahalo) without there first being porn on the internet.
After I grabbed a few tasks, I realized that the reason I'm here is to have fun. Plain and simple. I'm here to do some research on things a know a little about and like a lot. I am not here to make money.
When I realized that working on tasks made me feel like I was at work and not play, I quickly dropped them and when back to my stomping grounds.
I just hope that Mahalo will let people do what they do best, and still get enough people to get the job done.

M$With porn, there would be no internet as we know it today.. Ok, porn and online gambling sites...
(I don't really feel that way, but have seen lots of articles to that effect..)
Its the tubes...

I suspect the number of adult sites came about because they started off with a list of the top 1000 websites that Mahalo doesn't have pages for.
The net and human nature being what it is, that list would contain a fair number of "adult" sites.
I think it may a mistake anyway. Branding matters. If your friendly, helpful, trustworthy site gets associated with porn, trash and scams, you'll lose more than you gain.
Bunnyphuphu and Philpy, you are correct. We've drawn most of the webistes for the most popular sites according to Alexa. These often include sites with adult content.
I notice that it doesn't seem to have aroused a lot of buzz around the site. This is the first discussion I've seen of it.
I can understand why they chose that topic as it'll probably get a fair amount of traffic. However it's not really a topic that gets me very exicited.
2. How many tasks have you completed so far?
None. I suspect the tasks would take too long to be worthwhile for me.
I might try one just to check out how long they really take.
3. Are you going to claim tasks that involve researching ADULT websites?
No.
If I was going to write about any sites, I would at least write about sites that I am interested in, and would be happy to be associated with.

M$And "no" I do not plan on taking any of the tasks that cover adult content. Don't think my Pastor and my God would approve. Can't even picture writing GN's and background information for them. Keep adding tasks for politics, travel and companies... I will research and write GN's and FF for them as fast as you put them in the open tasks.

M$2. None, as they all seem too time intensive
3. Probably not, since I'm visiting from work.
