I'm a big fan of Ferrets.

*I've never really liked dogs... I mean, they're cute and fun, but I've always had a bit of a fear of them.
*I'm allergic to cats :(
*I've had fish, and you can't do much to bond with them
*I've had mice, I really didn't enjoy them much

Ferrets are sort of like a cross between a cat and a dog. They walk on a leash like a dog, they use a litterbox like a cat. They don't scratch up your walls, they don't make noise, they're fuzzy and cute, and affectionate, they live in a cage (or not, if wanted), they're a bit exotic, they're fairly cheap to maintain (unless you get hit with a big vet bill for a disease), they're very playful and exciting, easy to train, they get a long with other animals well; they do nip but it's easy to nip train them, they don't shed, they don't need baths (it makes them smell because it dries their skin), they eat kibble, they even give kisses like a dog! What more could you want from a pet!

Many people dislike ferrets before they've ever met one because "they're mean" and "wild" and "stinky". Those are all pretty big misconceptions.

Ferrets are hardly wild; they've actually been domesticated for thousands of years, and no longer exist in the wild. Even queen Victoria kept ferrets! Many people mistake them for their relative polecats, which look similar and ARE wild, but are most definitely two different animals. Ferrets are also not mean, in fact, they're very affectionate and sweet. People think they will attack anything that moves. While it's true they were originally bred for hunting, most ferrets won't even know what to do in the presence on prey. It'd rather play with a mouse than eat it, so they're not going to attack you and try to have you for dinner. The biting also concerns people. What you have to remember is that most animals play by having mock-battles, which does include some biting, but never hard enough to break the skin. Ferrets have thicker skin than human, so they can bite their pals a little harder without causing damage, but they don't know that! When you play with them, they might go to give you a little nip, because they see you as another ferret friend to have fun with. It's the same as a puppy, they just need to be nip trained, which is easily done with time outs and no nip products like bitter apple.

And of course, everyone thinks that ferrets stink. Ferrets actually have next to no smell. Sure, if you stick your face in them, they have a distinct scent.. but so does every other animal! Your not going to walk into a room and immediately smell a ferret running around, though. Most of the smell often comes from uncleaned litterboxes and blankets. If you keep these things clean, your hardly going to smell the ferret at all. People also make the mistake of bathing the ferret constantly to keep the smell down. This is wrong; the smell comes from oil in a ferret's skin. The oil is produced when their skin is too dry, bathing dries the skin, therefore producing more oil and more smell. Less bathing = more pleasant ferret!

Sorry for the speech, but I'm addicted to ferrets, and I could go on forever!

Plus, they sleep in hilarious locations and poses. How would you like to be going for a pair of socks and see THIS?! (this is Farrah)

I liked your answer but I also like a lot of the others so I voted no best because I think pets such a personal thing, I would go with dogs though as far as the pet that is closest to us.
and I don't know if you ever heard of Fungo. but he has caused a lot of Damage in the past.

Mine are cats, especially domestic shorthair mixes. (Easier to take care of: less brushing.)

Gotta go with cats. They are very affectionate and playful but don't require nearly so much hand holding (so to speak) as dogs. They are naturally very clean animals so litter training is a no brainer and they do not chew on things and destroy things the way dogs do.

I appreciate that a cat has a sense of itself and is not always trying to please its companion human.

I love to have a cat. i had one when I was a kid. she stayed with me in my room to give me company, while I was doing homeworks. She was happy to sit in my lap and I enjoyed her company a lot.

I like cats! :) I have six cats at home right now... They're my stress buster. Everytime I arrive home, seeing them run around and play with me keeps me relaxed! ^^

Definitely the dog, with the round, cute eyes!

-quote-
Your child runs with the gang, romps around the house, and steals treats off the table -- and he'll love having an accomplice in the fun.

Ideal for: Children who develop strong bonds. The animal-human relationship is particularly intense with canines. Think "man's best friend."

But remember: In general, dogs require the most care of any domestic animal. Promises like "I'll walk him and feed him every day" are usually broken quickly, even by the best-intentioned kid. Also, beware of bites. Never leave a pet and baby or young child together unattended.
