Russian tanks and troops invaded Ossetia, an aggressive move by Russia. Georgia is a member of NATO and under the protection of NATO. Putin launched an anti-Georgia campaign. Russia does not want a pro-Western Georgia.
1. The Georgia War last five days in South Ossetian and 390 people died and tens of thousands were displaced.
2. South Ossetia is cut off from the reset of Georgia militarily.
3. Thousands of Russian troops are station in South Ossetia.
4. Russia claims soldiers from South Ossetian fire mortars on them after being refused passage.
5. The city of Gori, a population of 50,000 was bombed when the war spread into Georgia from South Ossetia.
6. Russia claims the war started from a Georgian artillery assault on Tskhinvali and that Moscow sent in troops to protect Russian peacekeeping civilians.
7. Georgia claims it launched the barrage to repel Russian Tanks and troops that had begun to invade.

1. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili that offers Abkhazia broad autonomy but not independence.

It seems that Russia does not want conflict because of its disruption to oil transport to Western Europe. Georgia, on the other hand seems to be willing to create disruption to gain attention internationally.
Eric Margolis is painting NATO as the bad guy and Russia as the good guy. Russia was the aggressor moving troops and tanks into Ossetia as a show of force. NATO seems to be defensively protecting Georgia.
Margolis says Israel, Georgia, and the US are posturing against Russia. Margolis believed this aggression should not exist. However, Putin is demonstrating he is willing to exercise military force.
Azerbaijan is necessary for control of natural gas to Europe. Russia controls the flow of natural gas through Azerbaijan.
