What is your favorite ROCK band from the '80s to today?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It's impossible to not get caught in the mire of subjectivity with this question. The genre of "ROCK", is ambiguous. (And any concept of music genre over generalizes via bucketization.)

But I've found allmusic to have the best attemp at clasification of music genre: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=73:20

It doesn't list "ROCK" seperately. IT lists POP/ROCK together as a macro genre, with the following sub genre: Alt/Indie-Rock, Dance, Pop-Rock, Punk/New-Wave, Rock&Roll Roots.

Where I grew up (in the 80s), there were "Rock" radio stations, and "Alternative" radio stations. Then, Rock meant "Hard Rock", and "Alternative" meant "Alt Rock", or "Punk/New Wave."

Under that classification, my favorite 80s rock band was "the Cult".

My favorite Alt/Punk/New Wave bands were numerous... But I'd go with "the Smiths", "the Cure", "Bauhaus/L&R"

Really detailed answer! Great job! When I said rock, however, that includes any genre/subgenre. Still, you answered the question with flying colors.

if you are talking bands that started out in the 80s that would have to be U2 or Metallica, if it is bands that started before but were around in the 80s I can think of a few Rolling Stones, Rush, Cool and the Gang...

The Ramones are my choice. They were around in the 70's as well, but played through the 80s, so I'm sticking with them. They were also greatly, if not entirely responsible for punk music getting a good, stubborn foothold in the US and world.

80's - Billy Joel & Elton John
90's - Garth Brooks & Phil Collins
2000's - At the moment - Rob Thomas and Pink

If you meant a band that you liked from the 80's until today, It would have to be U2.

I'd say They Might Be Giants. I saw them three times live over the course of a year. They continually put out cool and interesting music, both for adults and children. I have all 13 of their albums, including their 3 children's albums. I also have their EPs and collections of B-sides.

My favorite of their albums is probably Mink Car, followed very closely by their latest adult album, The Else.

Under rock you'll find metal. And when you say metal, you actually mean Metallica.
