What is your favorite punctuation mark?

Why is that one your favorite? I have recently decided that the serial comma is my favorite because of the controversy it stirs amongst grammarians. All that fuss .. one little comma. Plus I want to be on the side of Punctuation Man who has endorsed the serial comma.

The flag is red, white, and blue.

Yours can be from any language.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My favorite is the section sign, or signum sectionis, sometimes called a paragraph sign. It appears in the context §11 on many old beer steins because of the old meaning:

"The beer code, or Bier-Comment of the Senior University, Heidelberg, as it is officially known, has passed through several revisions and editions since 1829. In common with other university beer codes, however, the Heidelberg laws begin with paragraph 11. Paragraphs 1 to 10 are left blank, being presumably the ten commandments of the Old Testament. The eleventh paragraph, or commandment of Heidelberg University reads: Es wird fortgesoffen, or, freely translated, "Keep on drinking."

My favorite would have to be the ellipsis!

FOUL! The ellipsis cannot be considered a punctuation mark because it is comprised of three periods...

Without the period, it would be nothing...

allow me to go with the dash - because really - i tend to use it every time I should actually use every other punctuation mark - i have to say that I don't do this when I'm writing my how-to's - nor do I use it when writing any formal letters - however - my emails to friends and family seem to be littered with them - i can't understand why - you know - i have a degree in english and a degree in english education - and many people think because of this that i should grade their e-mails or something - but i'm afraid i'm only grammatically correct when i'm getting paid for it or when i'm trying to look professional - punctuation - nah - capitalization - nah - all i need is the dash - beautiful - beautiful dash

It was between the dash and the parentheses for me. Close call though, dashes are really useful!

I would have to say the period. I've always admired the finality of it. In a way, it reminds me of death. However, the ironic feature of it is that three periods can be used for an ellipsis, which is letting you know something else is definitely following. The ellipsis reminds me of the afterlife, because it shows you something else is coming that's related to what was before, yet you still have no idea what it will be...

For those who have recently seen the answers I post it should be quite obvious I have a small obsession with the exclamation mark! << see there it is...
I love being able to show that I'm excited about something...also it helps me get my point across when I'm angry...:)

http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/4150729/2/istockphoto_4150729-exclamation-mark.jpg

I also am very fond of the ellipsis as well...I use it a lot...probably more then I should...

I would have to say the semi-colon.

I've even used it here on Mahalo Answers!

Although I can't say for certain that I've ever used it correctly . . . :)

Lynn Truss, in her book, "Eats, Shoots And Leaves" (which I really did try to read in full, but only got about one-third of the way through) actually sings the praises of the semi-colon, and admonishes writers etc. to use it as often as possible, lest it disappear from use completely.

(In fact, if you see another Maholoian using a semi-colon in one of their answers, let me know and I will actually tip them!)

So yeah, the semi-colon it is. Bye bye, street cred . . .

You never know . . . in the right surroundings, a reader might just appreciate it. As long as it's not used patronisingly or smugly then it can be quite easy on the eye.

because soooo many get it wrong!!!!

My favorite is the semi-colon.

The only reason is that naturally I learned all the other ones much earlier, so when I learned the semi-colon it was a neat new thing. A kind of "Who knew?" and "Yay! Cool!" experience. Frankly I don't think there is that much of a call to use them really. You can probably communicate more clearly and powerfully writing in a way that avoids the need for them. I suspect they're more often showing off or induging in a bit of writerly glee than anything else.

Therefore I can't bring myself to use one gratuitously in my answer. :)

Also it should be said, being a lttle bit of a geek, I am naturally attached to semi-colons, along with curly braces. If I could find reason to insert curly braces, semi-colons and ++ signs in my sentences I {probably++;} would.

I still remember learning about the semicolon from my imaginative elementary school teacher.

I found something on the internet that reminds me of his teaching style.

Come to think if it, in certain fannish circles, the "!" can be used to link two words in a semi-colon-ish way. That is quite useful!

As in: "We all know about Bunnyphuphu!Chihuahhua, but we never saw the obvious - Bunnyphuphu!Ellipsis..."

I think that the exclamation mark is my favorite as I feel that it is very important that you show your emotion when you are writing something for someone else to read. They know that the sentence that precedes the exclaimation mark is very important and has a lot of meaning to it. The ! is definitely my favorite!!

The semicolon is my favorite punctuation mark. Not only is it underused, but it is also used improperly. It should be used to join two related, but complete, sentences. It's a great way to cheat into a longer thesis in academic writing, as well as a frequently used punctuation mark in programming. The semicolon is superfluous; without being superfluous, it would not be special.

I just love the ~tilde~ because it does a beautiful job of helping me to sort important folders and files in MS Windows. When a folder or filename begins with a tilde, e.g., ~filename.doc, it goes to the top of the directory and I can easily find it. Even better, use multiple tildes and get even more control over sorting folders and files. So I don't use tildes for punctuation, but they are one of the handiest tricks I know of for finding files fast!
