Maui Jim Pilots come with a single color polarized lens. They are typically used only outdoors and are ideal to wear on a sunlit beach or snow covered slope. They are too dark to use at night, inside, or anywhere that you have rapidity changing brightness conditions. Maui Jim makes a low light lens, as well as real dark. Only Maui Jims wearers are wealthy enough to use something so trivial that they can be worn only a few hours a day in bright sunlight. Maybe that is why so many people wear them.
Maui Jim polarized lens cut glare and haze when driving so that your eyes are more comfortable and you can see better. They can reduce glare, from long, flat surfaces like the hood of your car, or the road's surface. Boaters, skiers, bikers, golfers, and joggers all benefit from polarized sunglasses. Although the name Pilots implies use in planes, polorized lenses cannot be used in airplanes with thick laminated windshields, it masks the reflections coming off other air traffic, making it harder to spot other airplanes. The thing with prescription frames is that they are generally rectangle and flat. Where a good set of designer glasses like all things in nature, are all curves, and wrap arounds. The Pilot nose pad brackets are an improvement on the traditional Aviators nose pads. The open nose pad brackets are easy to keep clean, and adjusted.
Maui Jim makes glasses that fit average size faces, only worn the way they want you to wear them. If like many of the baby boomers you like to wear your glasses further away from your eyes, out on your nose, you may find the skull temple guides too short.
