Maui Jim Pilots come with a single color polarized lens. They are typically used only outdoors and are ideal to wear on a sunlit beach or snow covered slope. They are too dark to use at night, inside, or anywhere that you have rapidity changing brightness conditions. Maui Jim makes a low light lens, as well as real dark. Only Maui Jims wearers are wealthy enough to use something so trivial that they can be worn only a few hours a day in bright sunlight. Maybe that is why so many people wear them.
Maui Jim polarized lens cut glare and haze when driving so that your eyes are more comfortable and you can see better. They can reduce glare, from long, flat surfaces like the hood of your car, or the road's surface. Boaters, skiers, bikers, golfers, and joggers all benefit from polarized sunglasses. Polarizing makes it impossible to see sheet ice on the road, but what would they know about that on Maui. Pilots look great, feel great, and in general get the job done.
Although the name Pilots implies use in planes, polorized lenses cannot be used in airplanes with thick laminated windshields, it masks the reflections coming off other air traffic, making it harder to spot other airplanes. It can also mask LCD displays like GPS receivers, making them harder to read unless you tilt your head sideways.
Maui Jim does not offer transitional lens. Not just on this pair but on any pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. Like any true outdoor only sunglass lens, Maui Jim, even in prescription Rx, stay dark all of the time.
Dark single color sunglasses are not safe for all driving conditions. When driving from bright sunlight into darkness, a driver wearing Maui Jim lenses may be temporary blinded, which reduces the time a driver has to react in an unexpected "see-and-avoid" traffic situation.
The Pilot is an excellent driving accessory. In driving it is important to get maximum protection from blinding glare, and only polarized lenses can do this. With the addition of transitional properties, drivers will enjoy a clearer view along with the elimination of most glare when moving in and out of the sun.
Maui Jims are Rx, which means that we can have prescription lenses made by anyone to our own specs to overcome the limitations inherent in the Maui Jim brand. Vision insurance provides progressive lenses with photochromics, that change color triggered by both visible, and UV light to make up for this omission.
Maui Jims Pilot can have polarized photochromic lenses, installed to bring to the eye, the best contrast in the varying light conditions of the day, as well as blocking out dangerous glare and haze, helping you see better when driving.

The thing with prescription frames is that they are generally rectangle and flat. Where a good set of designer glasses like all things in nature, are all curves, and wrap arounds. The Pilot nose pad brackets are an improvement on the traditional Aviators nose pads. The open nose pad brackets are easy to keep clean, and adjusted.
Maui Jim makes glasses that fit average size faces, only worn the way they want you to wear them. If like many of the baby boomers you like to wear your glasses further away from your eyes, out on your nose, you may find the skull temple guides too short. Maui Jim does not make longer temples, or customize sunglass frames for better fit.
