What is your favorite painting by Andrew Wyeth?

Sadly, Wyeth passed away early this morning at the age of 91.  My personal favorite has always been "Christina's World."
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

"Christina's World" is his best-known; one of the great American paintings. I also like "Her Room", a painting of his wife's room; "Around the Corner", and "Chambered Nautilus".  "Her Room", in its palette of blues, with the window and curtains and moonlight, is like entering a mysterious, beautiful, but familiar world.  Perhaps that what his wife represented to him

Here's a tribute to him.  May he rest in peace and beauty.

Wind From The Sea

I'm drawn to the dark realism of this painting. The aging vintage colours and flowing details are consistent in his work. Personally, the painting reminds me of the North East Coast as the seasons change from fall to winter. When looking closely at the painting, a sense of sadness and longing are evoked.

This is my favorite.

An amazing artist.  My personal favorite is "Braids" . Portrait painting is my favorite form of painting.  To me the face is the hardest thing to draw or paint.  It is amazing when the soul can be captured in a piece of art.  To paint a face is one thing but to capture the soul, to give a painting "life", to look at a painting to be able to see the personallity and character as well as the look for a person is a gift.  A gift of the artist to the rest of us

For me, it is also Christina's World, the painting of the young woman who is suffering from a paralyzing disease. It is painted in such a compassionate and sensitive manner. The positioning of her body and the vast windblown landscape that she is situated in give me a sense of tremendous fragility and longing. It is a very touching piece and one that has had a big impact on me as a painter, in terms of how we can evoke emotions out of art and how we feel compassion for our fellow human being.

I've always disliked his paintings; but, I took a look around images to answer this question and rather like this one. I'm a big pumpkin fan.

I love "Wind from the Sea" because, quite simply,  thoe gauze-like curtains really make me feel the wind blowing.

Let's not confuse sentiment with sentimentality in painting. One is an abstract expression of human understanding and feeling and the other is a purposeful manipulation of the emotions of others. All-things-Wyeth fall into the latter category and why the work is so....mawkish. Donnez-moi une pause, s'il vous plaît. He had a long career, and that's the only fact at hand. Many of us thorough enjoy the work of N.C., as it is pure illustration at its best. But his progeny? You make syrup from that sap. Sorry, Wyeth lovers, but it is what it is. If you wish to see genuine painting I suggest you discover Antonio Lopez Garcia, a real contemporary master of the real and etherial unreal.
