Fahrenheit 451: "It was a pleasure to burn."

That line chilled me to the bone.

"It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness." Baron Lytton's novel Paul Clifford.

Gotta go with the classic, Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities":

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way-in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

I knew the quote, but didn't know it was the opening line.

Excellent choice!

How about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson? "We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold."

The book changed journalism and was the defining story for the age of Gonzo journalists. The story was supposed to be an article covering a race in the desert, but Thompson chose to write the book through the perspective of a drug-fueled trip by the reporter himself and his lawyer.

This was the perfect way to launch the reader into a world of bats flying over cars and dinosaurs working reception.

I'd never given much thought to how I would die - though I'd had reason enough in the last few months - but if I had, I would not have imagined it like this.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyers! Its an AWSOME saga! you should read it!

"The Purpose Driven Life" -Rick Warren

The opening sentance is "It's not about you."

I found it humorous.

"The Man in Black fled through the desert, and the Gunslinger followed."

Opening to 'The Dark Tower' series by Stephen King. Rockin' line: now you have to read more.

"Many years later as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice." from One Hundred Years of Solitude.

And of course mention should be made of the opening line from Atlas Shrugged, "Who is John Galt?"

And as a happy coincidence, the Anna Karenina quote listed above is also the opening line to Nabokov's novel Ada or Ardor.

I've read a lot of books, and I've read a lot of great opening lines. But there are only two that immediately come to mind when I read a question like this.

1984, by George Orwell:

"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."

Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy:

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

I'll go with the Orwell, but really it's a dead heat between them.
