The first one was also called "Maltese Falcon" and came out in 1931, and the second was titled "Satan Met a Lady," and featured a young Bette Davis.
Just goes to show, though people claim today's Hollywood is "out of ideas," remakes have pretty much always been a part of the film business.

M$I have to resist listing all great remakes: Sabrina, Body Snatchers / The Invasion, Man on Fire, etc... It would take too much deep thought to actually come up with THE best remake, so I will say that "3:10 to Yuma" was surprisingly excellent.
