What is your favorite mockumentary (fake documentary) TV or Movie?

One of my favorite is A Mighty Wind and the BBC's People Like Us

Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm quite fond of the BBC series Look Around You, which parodied educational school films in Series 1 and topical variety shows in Series 2.

Eric Idle and Neil Innes don't get nearly the credit they should. "All You Need is Cash" originated the mockumentary, and the film included tons of great jokes and hilarious performances by Bill Murray, Mick Jagger, Gilda Radner, George Harrison and a bunch of others. Not to mention the Rutles themselves, who as everyone knows were a millstone in rock history.

Apparently John Lennon enjoyed it so much he stole Neil Innes' only copy and never gave it back.

I'm going to have to agree that the Rutles in "All You Need is Cash" is the best mockumentary out there. I don't know anybody who's better at playing the part of the snooty British filmmaker than Eric Idle.

The Rutles are so under-appreciated that it saddens me. Guest stars include: Lorne Michaels, Mick Jagger, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Paul Simon, Ron Wood, Bianca Jagger, Michael Palin, George Harrison, and Minnesota senatorial candidate Al Franken (as one of Ron Decline's [John Belushi's] henchmen).

If you like Rutland Weekend Television, Monty Python, or The Beatles, you'll love the Rutles.

My favorite mockumentary is "The Yes Men." It is very smart and funny. It makes a lot of fun of the WTO and the stupid corporate environment elite.

Mine without a doubt is Ali G,Sacha Baron Cohen. This will include all his short skits where he pretends to be a reporter and asks famous politicians and other notables some very funny questions without they realizing that he is but a comic.
He capped it all up with his hilarious movie,Borat, which reportedly has increased tourism to Kazakhstan twofold from the moment he shot that mockumentary(to borrow a term) there.Additionally he has done a documentary for the BBC tittled when Borat Came to town,he is currently working on a new Bruno Movie for which he has hired two gay prostitutes. You should check out Ali G he is hilarious.

So, in the Rock, Paper, Scissors of mockmuntaries, it's Eric Idle (The Rutles), Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), or The Office.

While I love them all, it's "Cheese and Onions" that I sing with glee to my wife. And so, I vote The Rutles, all you need is cash.

Spinal Tap and A Might Wind are wonderful, but an underappreciated mockumentary that is absolutely wonderful is "The Ruttles" a creation of Eric Idle and Neil Innes. This tongue in take off on the Beattles is done so well and it has a wonderful dry sense of humor. I usually go on and on describing things I love, but this is an experience that is better to experience... Check out the following links:

As I say below, "All You Need is Cash" (1978) predates "This is Spinal Tap" (1984).

Folks might also be interested in the British film "Bad News," which came out in 1983. "Bad News" features some of the same actors from "The Young Ones" tv series. It follows a heavy metal band in documentary style, and even includes some of the same jokes that later appeared in "This is Spinal Tap."
