I'm going to have to agree that the Rutles in "All You Need is Cash" is the best mockumentary out there. I don't know anybody who's better at playing the part of the snooty British filmmaker than Eric Idle.
The Rutles are so under-appreciated that it saddens me. As I say below, "All You Need is Cash" (1978) predates "This is Spinal Tap" (1984).
Folks might also be interested in the British film "Bad News," which came out in 1983. "Bad News" features some of the same actors from "The Young Ones" tv series. It follows a heavy metal band in documentary style, and even includes some of the same jokes that later appeared in "This is Spinal Tap."
