When An American Werewolf in London came out in 1981, this style of transformation effects was totally new! The CG effects we see today, we take for granted.
Not only was the movie creepy, funny and well made, it had the latest techniques used.
I went to see that movie in the theater at least 3 times. It's still an 80's classic!

M$Release in 1987, this movie has all the ingredients of a great horror movie. Great cast (Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet), intriguing storyline and a scary humanized devil.

M$This is one of the few times we get to see the demonstration of the 'terrible' hero. You can't even classify him as an anti-hero or vigilante. Ashley J. Williams is not ANY kind of hero, but because no one was able to fill that role, it was more or less forced onto him. He is a less than quality man taking the heroes mantle. And in the end, no one is saved, the evil is not destroyed, and a woman is violently raped by shrubbery. I'm not making that up!
In the end, what is more horrifying, knowing you have no chance? Or looking to a hero and having hope crushed as he fails to save anyone but himself and fails to stop the 'great evil'?

M$In the late 1970s, and early 1980s, the United States was gripped by the after shocks from Vietnam. There were many that wanted the United States to give up on internationalism, and revert back to the isolationism that was the mainstay before WWII.
One of the reasons why the United States had so much prosperity in the 1980s was due to investors taking on this train of thought. Investment in foreign holdings dipped a lot in the early 1980s as investors believed that it would be best to bring all of their money into the United States (essentially surrounding themselves with money). Foreign economies weakined while ours strengthened.
The United States began to give up on the monikor of, "World Policaman," and focus more on one particular issue. Instead of being spread around in issues around the world, Reagan believed that if he focused only on Communism, and on protectionism (building up military) that we could dominate or end the Cold War. As other nations fell to the wayside, We simply prepared for the worst with the USSR. Remember, though, we did win the Cold War.
Enter 1985's, "Day of the Dead." Instead of hiding in a farmhouse, or in a mall, the characters in, "Day of the Dead," hid in an underground tunnel system. They cut themselves off from the rest of the world in an attempt to come to a sollution as to how to defeat the zombies. Most of these characters realized that the best way to defeat this enemy might be to figure out what makes it tick instead of just going out and shooting.
Just like Reagan had to, a najority of the characters had to deal with the military people that were on hand who just wanted to go out shooting. Instaed of wanting to take out as many communists as possible, these military guys wanted to take out as many zombies as possible.
Notice the commentary at the end of the movie, though. It spoke strongly against isolationism. Remember that once the zombies got free, most of the characters had no where to go. They had cut themselves off from the rest of the world, and were devoured by their own stupidity.
Like all of Romero's zombie movies, "Day of the Dead," has a strong social commentary. If you look between the zombies (figurtively) you will see it. It will stare you straight in the face like the cold dead eyes of the zombies themselves. "Day of the Dead," is my favorite 1980s horror movie due tot he fact taht it makes you think. It makes you realize that you need others around you if you wish to succeed. You always need those others to possibly provide another way out of the problem.

M$The Believers (1987) Martin Sheen plays a widower father. The housekeeper sets up a little santaria alter to protect the son from a string of child murderers. Well, then things get bad.
It's scary because it could happen to anyone. There is no super powerful villain who gets up after you've stabbed him with your knitting needles (Like in Halloween) there's no monster who kills you in your dreams. Just crazy nutty old ladies who want to light candles, kill chickens and torture children. The ending is really powerful.
