What is your favorite flower to keep in your garden and why?

When my family and I move to Kentucky, the first thing I am going to do is buy several seeds and get to work on my new garden! What is your favorite flower to keep in your garden, and why does it appeal to you so much? I am just looking for ideas on what the perfect combination of flowers will be for my new garden!

Actually, I live in Kentucky and the variety of flowers we can have is awesome. My grandmother always put irises and tiger lilies down one side of her garden. This being between the vegetable garden plot and her yard. This would hide the broken up dirt and make it look so much more attractive. Lots of people fill their "ditches" up with tiger lilies too. They are pretty.

One of my favorite flowers to grow is marigolds. There are so many different kinds and they so easy to grow. Of course they go great along the edge or larger flowers. For spring my absolute favorite are peonies. I love the white, pink and dark pink ones. These are one of my most favorite flowers. My great-grandmother had some and we actually got starters from her bushes. They are still alive today. This are my favorite not just because they are beautiful, but because they are very sentimental to me as well.

My favorite flowers are phlox they have a very long bloom cycle, require little effort and thrive.

I love flowers so much, so it’s hard to pick just one favorite. Since its spring now, I’m going to plant roses, tulips, violet, bleeding heart, gardenia, marigold, hydrangea plant, dahlia flowers, cosmos and zinnia. These spring-blooming perennials are so beautiful and will give my garden a cheerful and vibrant look. Many of them are bloom year after year with no additional help.

That is wonderful that you live in a climate where you can grow flowers from seed. I could try and do that, but I live up Canada where I only trust Zone 2 flowers. Can you imagine?

Although we are limited by our short season (we had a snow fall that stayed for two days over the weekend) we purchase our plants already in bloom so we can enjoy them from the minute we are able to. Of course green houses are popular and most of the greenhouse owners will start their plants from seed.

I currently have waiting on a table to be planted, some alyssum, pansies and petunias. I am going to wait two more days and plant hopefully on Thursday afternoon. I feel that the frost will not be back until the fall, but that's a pretty big prediction.

All that being said, my favourite flower changes often, but this season it is alyssum. I love the fragrance. It is much better than any of the more decorative flowers. Plus it attracts birds and bees because of its scent.
