I agree that all of these movies are now considered "classics" and have their place in the Best Movies of the 80s category, but I think one movie tops them all. How can we forget the holiday classic A Christmas Story, released in 1983?

While we may catch The Breakfast Club, and The Goonies every once in a while on Turner Classics, its hard to find a household that doesn't watch A Christmas Story every holiday season since 1983. It's an American tradition!

Toungues stuck to frozen poles, getting kicked in the face by Santa, fuzzy pink bunny costumes, shooting your eye out... It doesn't get any better. I vote for America, I vote for A Christmas Story.

Hands down, the quintessential 80s movie is "When Harry Met Sally (1989). I was a college freshman and these clips sum up life for a late-bloomer.

"Coming to America" (1988) was fantastic. In the barbershop, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall played every character in the scene. I think Eddie Murphy is the barber, Arsenio is the guy in the chair getting his hair cut and Eddie Murhy is the old white guy.

How did you guys miss this entire genre: Leslie Nielsen & "Airplane" (1980) and "Naked Gun." (year unknown but close). Those and Johnny Dangerously (1984), Top Secret (1984)...no one will ever make them like that, I don't think. THOSE are definitive 80s films.

.Oh yeah--the other choice is "The Breakfast Club."

The 1985 James Spader/Robert Downey Jr. cinematic masterpiece "Tuff Turf" is my favorite 80s Movie because really.. I walk the night... I walk the night.

"Where enemies are made, reputations are earned and love is the most risky affair of all."

Really you have to watch the "I Walk The Night" video.

Amazing sets, absolutely brilliant soundtrack, and who can really resist a good Connery movie?

I think it's critical to add Sixteen Candles - even Family guy makes reference to that movie!!
And the first time you saw Long Duc Dong, TELL me you didn't laugh!!

I'm also throwing in Weird Science because that movie was hilarious. Kelly LeBrock was also ridiculously hot. I think that was the first tiem I saw a girl in bikini panties. I had no idea they even made those...

I love the 80s. I was a teenager then during the 80s and most of the movies that were mentioned above are also my favorite. If I were to cast my vote I would vote Back to The Future series and I think these are awesome.

I can still recall Marty (Michael J. Fox) and the fast cars, the different setting in the future and the past makes it an interesting movie plus the many funny scenes that comes with it. I would surely vote for Back to the Future as the best 80s movie of all time! I think this is one of the best Robert Zemeckis film too.

The Abyss, written and directed by James Cameron is one of the most epic movies from 80s. Originally released in 1989, but it also has extended Special Edition that was released several years later during 1993.

Reason why it's so epic is that there surely aren't that many full length movies before it that have been filmed in similar underwater conditions as they built for The Abyss. It's simply in it's own class. DVD version has interesting documentary about creation of the movie (I found lighting part of things quite interesting considering that large part of the movie was underwater).

It's not perfect (no movie is) but the end result is very good overall. They got Oscar for Best Visual Effects (1990) and Golden Reel Award "Best Sound Editing - Sound Effects" from Motion Picture Sound Editors, USA.

Broadcast News was utterly prescient in 1987, and a great film to symbolize the decade. As if juggling hip renditions of both a classic love triangle, and personal ambition on many levels, weren't enough to applaud, there's so much more. It's eerie to look back now and see today's real-life media conundrums writ so large and portrayed so skillfully. With a cast so overflowing with talent (Holly Hunter, William Hurt and many, many more) it's easy to forget that even Jack Nicholson was in it. It deserves further kudos for having both James L. Brooks and Albert Brooks combine their complementary skills. Imagine writing or delivering such memorable lines as "I say it here, it comes out there" and "a lot of alliteration from anxious anchors placed in powerful posts!"

I can’t believe no one has said ‘The Outsiders’, ‘Flashdance’ and ‘Footloose’.

Not only was ‘Footloose’ entertaining, the soundtrack was awesome. I have to say I’ve have watched it at least 30 times. “We just want to dance!”

‘The Outsiders’ was more drama field for me. I really could related to the characters. It had Matt Dillon in it and I fell in love!!! There was plenty of eye candy there for a young girl with Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, and many more. This was actually one of the only movies that I could watch with my Dad that we both enjoyed. Finally a movie that teenagers could watch with their parents and it not be lame. It left me in tears. I watched it again recently when I came out on DVD.

‘Flashdance’ was awesome for me. This was the first movie I got to see boobies in. I thought that was cool haha. Plus I was interested in seeing what the future years had in store for me. This one really made all the girls want to be a dancer.

And for the record, 'Sixteen Candles' is by far the best Molly movie!

I would definitely say my favorite 80s movie was Back to the Future, and the hoverboard scene was my favorite of course. I still was one to believe that an actual hoverboard could exist, yet realize that it's one of the most impossible things to actually build and work. I think what's great about Back to the Future is all the special effects it had before its time.

I am quite sure I have seen every movie on this list so far, and enjoyed pretty much all of them. But there were two movies from the 80s that I remember being particular favorites of mine, and both are not yet listed.

First was Conan the Barbarian (1982).
Why you ask? Well first of all, what other movie has a future governor of California saying "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women." and reveals the shocking fact that Darth Vader was in fact a snake demon who loved steel!
In all seriousness, this movie was one of my favorites of all time. I recently watched it again (after a couple decade break) and pretty much could recite every line before it was spoken. Yes, it seems a bit "cheesier" now that I'm all grown up, but it was great for the type of movie it was, fantasy.

The second movie on my 80s list is Mad Max: The Road Warrior (1981)
Much like Conan, this movie was a great fantasy flick for teens like me. It single-handedly made me yearn for a car with giant back wheels and a blower popping out of the hood as well as defining what the coolest of "lone wolves" would look like.

It would be a couple decades later before I realized that my two Hollywood heroes (rather the actors portraying them) didn't quite match my expectations, but I still look back on both movies fondly.

If I had to pick just one, I would have to go with Mad Max. In an odd way, it was my first exposure to foreign film. While I realize that there was no apocalypse leading Australians to drive around in death machines and that Thulsa Doom didn't really exist, both were very entertaining (the main reason we watch movies, right?)

I think the first Indiana Jones installments deserve to be mentioned. Harrison Ford makes Shia La Boeuf look like Mr. Bean. Indiana Jones is a showcase of intelligence and manliness not being "non-overlapping magisteria." Stand By Me is an awesome coming of age movie. Fast Times at Ridgemont High set the precedent for teenage movies today. Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Das Boot are stories that every pro-war and every anti-war person today should see. Raging Bull and Amadeus are semi-fictional in-depth explorations into not-so-usual personalities we witness in lighter forms every day.

My single most favorite 80's movie is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, because it's the first movie I watched in my life, and it has influenced me more than any other film from the same decade. Everything from Archaeology to Politics were covered. There's adventure, comedy, drama, and romance, and the music and scenery were exciting. The story is about an intellectual who knows how to get his hands dirty and stand up for his principles. The world still lacks people like that, so I think it is a great movie for young people today. Older people should watch and learn from it, too.

"Breakfast Club" written by John Hughs. The other top contenders have one very important component missing - we did not get to know the individual characters, their faults, their frailties as we did in the "Breakfast Club." Who can forget the scene in which the football player cried out, "You gotta win! You gotta win!" or when the bad boy revealed he was beaten by his father and the stress of the straight "A" student to make perfect grades that he brought a flare gun to try to kill himself?

Even the Kleptomaniac revealed her absolute loneliness by coming to detention because she had nothing else better to do or anyone to do it with and the most popular girl in school had to struggle to keep herself on a pedestal.

Who could forget their cute little dance number?

Who could forget when the nerdy guy said to the popular girl that it's okay for her to continue to ignore him when they went back to school and she stated she doesn't ignore her friends.

In one day their lives changed forever.

I have two suggestions: Valley Girl, and Better Off Deadl Who can forget Sonny Bono in Valley Girl, who stereotypes pretty much everyone from the 1980s: the pot-smoking parents, the cute bag-boy, and who can forget the completely self-absorbed teenage star, who taught us every 1980s term from "Like Totally" to "Gag Me with a Spoon."

And "Better Off Dead" is another 80s movie, focusing on the many difficulties that a simple love note can do when it gets into the hands of others.

Valley Girl gets my vote!

My favorite 1980s movie is ''Just One of the Guys'', starring Joyce Hyser. This is a gender bender movie that came in the middle of a streak of gender bender movies that included ''Tootsie'', ''Yentl'' and ''Victor Victoria''. In ''Just One of the Guys'', a high school girl changes schools and dresses up as a boy in order to get a fair chance at being a writer on the school newspaper. Just like the rest of the films in this streak of gender bender films, this movie is a funny but also serious look at the different ways that society treats men and women.

''Just One of the Guys'' used to be on cable all the time, and I would watch it whenever it came on. If you read the reviews of this movie on Amazon, you will see that many people consider this movie to be a masterpiece, as insightful as anyone's doctoral dissertation.

Dirty Dancing! I fell in love with Patrick Swayze's character! "NOBODY PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER!"
Jennifer Grey was great as a shy, naive, little miss goody 2 shoes. It's always those quiet ones for whom you have to WATCH OUT! This movie has great music, comedy, drama, sexiness and the controversial subject of abortion. What more could you ask for in a movie. I could watch this movie over and over (and I have).

My favorite movie from the 80's was the original Fame movie.

The movie was set in New York City at the New York City for Performing Arts where gifted students learn to hone their craft. There are actors, actresses, singers, dancers, musicians etc. The movie is mostly about four of these students that are followed from the time that they auditioned to get into the school to their graduation.

It is one of a very few movies that I have watched more than once and enjoy it each time.

Well I would personally have to go with Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. This movie was well written, and kept your attention for the entire film. I own this VHS, and play it when I have my little nieces and nephews over, and they still enjoy it! I think it is hard to find an actual movie that people will love no matter what decade or year it was created. This is one of those films in my belief, and it never gets old for me. It is also one of those movies that everyone in the family can enjoy watching together, everyone find something in it entertaining. It has enough humor that an adult would enjoy watching it but still has enough child moments to make it suitable. This was a tough decision, personally I love most movies from the 80's, and prefer them over most movies they come out with today, they all seem to be the same movie with different actors. Great question!

There are so many great movies from the eighties, especially those starring one or more of the "Brat Pack" actors. For me, St. Elmo's Fire defined the decade and a lot of my life. The movie came out in 1985, a year after I graduated from High School and was studying in university. The movie had me wondering a lot about how post-university life would be, if I would be able to keep my group of close-knit friends. As it were, I didn't graduate from university so my post-university life started a bit early. But the movie was and still is one of my favorites. It had so many of the "Brat Packers": Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham, and one of the most inspirational theme songs ever. Written by Canadian composer David Foster and performed by John Parr, the song became the theme for Rick Hansen's Man in Motion tour. Can it really be almost 25 years already?

Well, I wasn't old enough to like The Breakfast Club at the time but out of those 4, it's clearly the winner and here's why. It helped jump start the careers of Emilo Estevez, Anthony Micheal Hall, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald.

Without The Breakfast Club we wouldn't have Young Guns, Short Circuit, Stakeout, Maximum Overdrive, Men At Work, and many more 80s movies that helped jump start even more careers (not you Bon Jovi, you still suck). I realize the same can be said for each of these movies but The Breakfast Club is one of THE most mentioned movies when anyone talks about the 80s. Period.

Hey, ease up on Bon Jovi! I grew up going to a rival high school in New Jersey and I was a top-40 on-air personality from 1990 to 1993, playing mostly rock like Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Aerosmith, etc...

And Livin' on a Prayer is on a new Chipmunks CD. I instantly recognized the song on my 5-year-old son's CD--the backing track is identical, or close--but I got a jar when the singing started.
By playing them at the same time on this age and using the pause button at bottom left of each video, you can stnc them--damn near identical and now available to masses of kids who can't understand the lyrics.

Many of these movies hold high ranks for me, with Breakfast Club being my second, but as I said on a question not too long ago, my very favorite is Better Off Dead, with John Cusack. Soooo awesome.

Cheers!

I LOVE Ferris Bueller's Day off! It has great comedy, a romantic interest, and a great sidekick- probably the greatest sidekick of that entire decade! You can't do any better for high schoolers than a Principal either.

Plus this is where I learned about the 4th wall. Great use of the fourth wall here.

The Breakfast Club, for me, was a life-changing movie. For personal reasons, I will ALWAYS see Breakfast Club as the best movie of the 80's.

I was in high school when this came out and really struck a cord with me. John Hughes was a master of teen angst... ANY John Hughes movie would be a suitable "Best of the 80's" movie.

You have forgotten one other JH movie: Weird Science

The Goonies for sure! I wasn't able to live in the 80's and I wish I had the chance too, because I love the music, the movies, and the fashion-or lack of.
The 15th year anniversary is coming up on June 7!
The four characters had the most hilarious nicknames: Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, and Brand!
Chunks Truffle Shuffle is unforgettable compared to the other 80's movies up for the award, they can't compare!

I was an 80's teenager which I feel could be an inportant consideration in this movie vote. The teen movie was in and we ran to the theater.

Without a doubt, my vote goes to The Breakfast Club. A great director and the beginning of many of the actors careers started with this movie as mentioned before.

But beyond that, the movie itself has all the classic elements of a great film. The handsome good boy, the pretty good girl, the kooky girl, the nerdy boy and most important of all, the hot bad boy.

All of these characters eventually blend together in one united force against the ridiculous authority figure. (Who didn't have that teacher?!)

And then we gradually see that all these people are not exactly what they are pigeon-holed to be. Their time together connects them and yet will it change them or will they continue on with the facade they give to the world?

As a teenager, you instantly knew the answer to that.

Oh wow, So many to choose from... But, as a child in the 80's living in a foster home with a family size of 15 people on average.. The Movie we all agreed on and watched over and over was.. The Never Ending Story...
It had so much in the movie to think about a ponder, and was fascinating enough to watch over and over.. We all loved Back to the Future as well, and The Karate Kid .. was a very inspirational movie to me.. even more so when I had the priviledge to meet Pat Morita in real life, as he was related to a friend I went to school with. I remember her bringing him to show an tell ... Another family favorite was Pete's Dragon .. But for me personally.. I think would have to be The Never Ending Story, and the Karate Kid tying.. Although I loved Back to the Future .. as well 80's movies were really good movies to relate to.. had good value...and were fun.. I always talk about how I wish they would make new movies with the 80's movie style.. But now, Instead they are taking the other approach I do not necessarily like.. and are remaking the 80's classics like Karate Kid.. Instead of remaking it.. Why couldn't they add a Karate sequeal and just make it where the original master was the teacher of the new guy :) ...That would make more sense instead of remaking the original .. keep the story going.. with the new teacher and new student.. they could have even brought back the old student as an adult .. in parts of.. Anyhow.. 80's movies are definately special in the classics.. I vote Karate Kid.. final answer :d .. It had a good story line, good picture, good graphics.. and was realistic, and inspiring.

You must be horrified to hear of the new remake/redux of Karate Kid, with the son of Will Smith and Jackie Chan in the starring roles. But I also loved Daniel-san and Miyagi.

If I had to cast my vote for one of the above 80s movies, I would definitely vote for The Breakfast Club. While I wasn't quite a teen in 1985, (far from it actually) the reason that this movie was so popular was because nearly everyone could relate to at least one of the characters. Following this, everyone wanted to see more of Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, and Emilio Estevez.

I can think of several movies that were not mentioned that have always been personal favorites of mine: Dirty Dancing, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Weird Science, Footloose, and Stand By Me.

However, my personal favorite 80s movie of all-time would have to be Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, based on the song by Cyndi Lauper. This was the debut of Sarah Jessica Parker, and served as the movie that launched her Hollywood career. When I was a kid, I watched this movie over and over again, either by myself or with my friends, singing to the songs and dancing along.

My favorite 80's movie would be Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze. To me, I loved the dancing scenes, as well as the story line. Plus, who could forget the songs.
