Silver, because my favorite opera, Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier (The Rose Cavalier) has a wonderful song (and scene) entitled "The Presentation of the Silver Rose" - a young, noble cavalier of about 16 years formally presents a silver rose to a young noble lady of the same age...and here's the twist...he does so on behalf of a much older man who is in enamoured of the oung girl and wishes to marry her. Of course, the handsome, young cavalier and the young lady fall in love at first sight. You can guess the rest.
The Metropolitan Opera gift shop in New york City sells silver roses and one sees people wearing them for performances of this wonderful opera.
