What is your favorite band?

This is the band whose music you could listen to on a daily basis. My favorite band is Jimmy Buffett an the Coral reefers, and I could listen to this music on a daily basis and never get tired of it. Jimmy just put out another album and is still touring...

Who is your favorite band and why are they so special to you.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Shoot, Amy, why're you trying to make us choose just one??? Although I like the guidance you gave: "could listen to on a daily basis".

I have so many faves that I can - and often do - listen to on a (near-)daily basis. Though I don't because there are too many great ones, too few minutes, too much new music to check out, etc.

I love Jimmy and have seen him a bunch o' times in the past 25 years. But, I honestly can't say that I COULD listen to him EVERY day. Heck, I love his concerts but I no longer go most years because it has become too ritualized. I could say the same about Tom Petty and Jackson Browne. Bob Marley and Green Day are two that I haven't seen, but I think would fit here.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have enough passion and variety. The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and U2, likewise.

There are sooooooo very many others that occupy tiers just slightly lower. But, since you asked us to name one, and I've already named two tiers and nine artists. So, I'll stop. Thanks for getting me going.

(By the way, I am about to put up a new edition of Best Video Version Ever, and I hope that everyone passionate enough about music to answer this question will come check it out, nominate and vote!!!)

Too many I love... I don't know if I can just pick one. If I had to pick one it would Fleetwood Mac. This band only has one song I do not like, that little demon song. All others I love. That is very unusual with a group for me. The Chain and Big Love is my most favorite. Walk of Life by Dire Straights is my favorite song, but Fleetwood Mac is my favorite band.

Other honorable mentions:

U2
Led Zepplin
Arctic Monkeys
INXS

I love Muse.

I love their music - such a diverse mix, so many genres and so much energy. It's great stuff to listen to because their music can put you in any mood. It's hard to predict what kind of song that will come next.

I love how they're unique - I stand out from the shallow rap and modern music of my generation, and I love it. I can't stand being the same as anyone else. Like my iPod nano - I really did not want it at all because some other kids had some already. It was even worse with the iPod touch. Eventually, I got used to it, but it says something about me. same thing with brand name clothes.

I love the diverse and varied use of tone colour - the range of instruments they use are amazing. a normal, three-man band plays the usual intruments, but there is often use of a keyboard. Muse uses alot of orchestral music as well, and you can tell just by listening. It's really immersive music.

I deeply enjoy watching them live - they have won a few awards for their concerts.

The Temper Trap

because, the vocalist was from Indonesia! their single "Sweet Disposition" was listed in (500) Days of Summer soundtrack. the music bring rock, danceable, and what make most unique is they combine it with a litle bit choir so they bring more atmospheric sound.
the temper trap is one of the best indie band out there!!

At the moment I have fallen back into my obsession with the band Tool. I also am enjoying A Perfect Circle (same lead singer so it counts!) Something about their songs just hits the right message. The best song from them is Disgustipated...in my opinion it just sends this eye opening message, to me and some of my friends at least.

I would put a video up but my sound card is fried and some songs have bad words and I don't want to offend anyone!!

I would pick Neil Young.

He was one of the most prolific songwriters and music producers of all time. Each of his songs has a deep, often hidden meaning that I admire.

I like how many of his songs are anecdotal. The "Harvest Moon" video I posted below will show what I mean. It's a beautiful song and the story brings tears to my eyes. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2txt_neil-young-harvest-moon_music

Neil Young has experimented with many music styles. Despite this, he has affected rock music forever and is the quintessential Rock Star.

The best thing about Neil Young is that when you're sober or drunk, you can sing along with him quite well, as he was never known for his vocals. He would get kicked off American Idol if he were to do an audition.

Not too many people know this about Neil, but he has epilepsy and so does his daughter. His two sons also have cerebral palsy. Despite this, he has always been rockin' on the stage, and off the stage by holding various fundraisers for programs to support children with disabilities.

Another band I like, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young (CSNY), features Neil in many of their works. My favorite works by CSNY always included Neil Young. They were markedly worse without him, despite Neil being notoriously difficult to work with.

Matchbox 20. Rob Thomas's songs are so deep and meaningful, and so easy for me to relate to. He tells the same stories every songwriter tells, but in a completely different way. Also, as seen in this video, they don't just regurgitate the same old commercial versions of songs in their concerts. They always take a few songs and do them very differently than the commercial version.

I love the Kinks. Ray Davies and his brother Dave have created so many great songs that have been highly influential in so many genres. Their first two 1964 hits - "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night" - laid the template for heavy metal and punk rock. YRGM caused Ozzy Osborne to pick a guitar and launched more than a few garage bands. That song also gave Van Halen their first big hit 14 years later.

Two other highly-regarded new wave bands got their first hits with Kinks songs, the Pretenders with "Stop Your Sobbing" and the Jam with "David Watts". Their "See My Friends" was the first Western pop song to make use of the Indian drone effect, a few months before the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood", thereby starting raga rock.

They were overshadowed by their fellow British Invasion bands like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who, not because of a lesser talent but bad management decisions and a ban by the American unions in 1965 that ousted the Kinks from touring America for 4 years, effectively losing them their mainstream audience during the vital years 1965-1969.

However, they persevered. Not only did they write the hardest rocking songs during the British Invasion years but they also produced some of the most gorgeous songs ever recorded - ie. "Waterloo Sunset", "Autumn Almanac", "Days", "Shangri-la".

Ray Davies wrote some of the most intelligent and melodious songs ever. They are seriously under appreciated by the mainstream but not by fellow musicians, continuously influencing the next generations of rockers and popstars. .

I love the Kinks, too, and this now explains your answer over on the Best Video Version Ever "Louie, Louie" question!!! (I hope you noted that I also featured the Kinks' version. ;-) )

I camped out for Kinks' tickets in the early 80's, had a great seat in a small theater and was not at all disappointed.

Finally, I hope you have heard that Ray is actively recording an album taking some of the old Kinks' numbers and re-casting them with other artists. Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi recorded with him last month. (www.backstreets.com will lead you to a couple of articles about it.)

Absolutely "The Weakerthans" - their brand of folk-rock is lyrics intense, and when I'm not listening to their simple melodies via mp3, I'm thinking about what they have to say.

Tegan and Sara

If you haven't heard of them or heard their music then you should really check them out. They are Canadian twins who write, producer and record their own music - rarity these days. They released their sixth studio album this past October and have been around for 10 years.

I found them about two years ago and their songs helped me through a bad break up. They can descirbe relationships in a way that doesn't seem possible. Instances where you cannot find the words to describe your feelings they have cleverly and intelligently found a way to explain them. Lyrically they are masters. And their live shows are legendary. Both are extremely funny, real and down to Earth. They are known for their onstage banter where they have fun teasing each other and telling real life stories. I've taken several friends to their show who've never heard their music and they all left being huge fans.
