What is your dream job? Why aren't you doing it?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00

I am!

Well..my first choice was starting center of the Montreal Canadiens, but since I'm only 5'7 and well past the prime of most NHL prospects.

I had to look for new dreams... I toiled in the tech support industry for 5+ years and hated the cubicle culture, I would call in sick just so that I could peruse the Internet at home, I started a blog and within a few months I started getting freelancing offers.

Years later, Mahalo is now my third freelancing gig and by far my favourite, I love the fact that I can be creative, and I get an opportunity to play around on the internet and help out this startup company which is all about research and archiving, which are concepts I love. I've built hundreds and pages and hope I get to build hundreds more as it succeeds into the future.

Very insightful. I'm actually graduating early from high school this January because I haven't been learning anything at school. I really good to hear that people can actually find jobs that allow them to chase their passions.

I am absolutely in love with computers, networks and everything related. My dream job would be anything dealing with technology. I also want, more than anything else, to serve in a position that allows me to assist in saving lives. There's not a specific title for my dream job, so long as it covers those bases.

To answer your second question... I am doing it. As an employee in the department of Information Technology at one of Kansas City, MOs largest hospitals, I get to participate in the saving of many lives every day. I may not be credited, but I get to assist with providing the technologies that save the lives of victims, bring babies into the world, and keep your grandpa alive long enough for you to say your goodbyes.

I am almost doing my dream job.

I have always dreamed of being a writer and I am.

However, in my dream, I made more money than I do now.

That will happen soon. Not today, but soon.

Interesting question!

The thing with the phrase "dream job" is that when you actually do something in your life that you have been dreaming of and that thing gives you money, you do not consider it as a job. I never thought of doing a job but followed what I wanted to do. This gave me all the resources that I needed in my life. Those resources are not only money but also happiness, excitement, creativity, etc. And of course the "job" is not a static thing, it constantly changes.

As for what I am doing, I am an entrepreneur and have created several companies on internet related projects since I was 18 (almost 11 years ago!).

Thanks, I meant it more of a personal question, since I am 17 and wondering why people end up doing things that they hate, i.e. many public school teachers.

Justin,

Let me then give you some advice from my personal experience.

First of all, the things that you dream of now won't be the same for long. So start with something that you really want to do now and get to feel the excitement of doing what you have dreamed of. You might fail but that's ok. I have failed most of the times but one success usually covers many failures and then failures become something fun to discuss with your friends even if at the time that they happened were pretty bad:)

You might not have the resources (money / team) to start a business on your own. If that's the case, try to find them hard and if you fail in every way, get a temporary or part time job. This is what many refer to as "mind your own business" meaning that even if all your friends and other people believe that your work is your job, you know that it isn't and that you are working for a very specific reason; to start your own business.

I was still at school on 17, studying to take the exams for the university. The day I succeeded to enter the university to become a physicist it was also the day I started my own business with my best friend from the school. We are still a very strong team since that day!

So at the age you are now, focus on trying to work on something you have dreamed of and do not wait thinking that you can do this later. This is the right time!

Full time ski instructing. I am not doing it because I know I will find a job I enjoy more once I finish school. Someday when I am retired I will return to the mountains (if there is any snow left by then) and become a full time ski instructor while living out my final years in the fluffy comfort of snow.

There's a scene in the movie High Fidelity, where John Cusack is sitting in his kitchen making a list of the top five all-time jobs he's always wanted. His girlfriend comes in and adds "owner of a record store" to the bottom of the list--which is what he's doing at that moment.

Not to get really high flown, but it's really pivotal to the movie and it's kind of a "love the one you're with" or "live in the moment" message.

I'm doing what I love--writing. It doesn't pay well, I don't get to travel like I'd like, and there are other things that I dream of doing one day. But right now, what I'm doing is what I want to do.

Same here. I want to be a writer and I do write. The only problem is that it doesn't pay well. Actually, it doesn't pay at all...
