What is your anti-drug?

I have a couple of them my self... some are good. Some not so healthy:
Cigarettes
Caffeine
Writing
Movies
Sleeping
Bar Hopping/Drinking with my existential nihilistic best friend
Tip for best answer: M$1.52

You should be, quiting any addiction is hard especially when it comes to drugs or alcohol.

Oh... bravo! I love that answer... and as a former user of some hard stuff.... I concur 100%. One of the 'drug lifestyle' aspects that I never really got used to or... believe it or not, even approved of. I quit without really hitting 'rock bottom', but because of personal life quality and the fact that people on drugs really only talk about drugs. It was annoying.
I like to think I had the foresight to quit before I hit rock bottom.
Only thing important now is that I am clean, even in the face of still being around that garbage. So, I am proud of me.

Mine? Life. Science has proven you can literally get high on it, no joke.
Put in some effort and you can get a pretty nice chemical reaction in your brain-- the good way!

My anti-drug is spending time with animals. I have two dogs and they are very important in my life. While my family and kids are also inspirational, I've been known to take a day here and there and spend time at the local animal shelter. I can be there for hours and not even know how much time has passed. Each dog and cat gets my attention and interaction time. Even though I can't bring them home (I've got two adopted dogs home already), they get a person to themselves for a while. Someday they will go home with their forever family but until then, any time anyone can give to socializing future pets is time well spent and I personally get lots out of it for myself.

I have a number of anti-drugs. That way, I will always have a back-up plan in case I am unable to obtain one of the others. The first is exercise. Aerobic activity helps to eliminate stress, and the endorphins released during strenuous exercise can have a similar (albeit less dramatic) effect on the brain and body.

While I try to exercise nearly every day, there are still some days that I am just not feeling up to it. With the winter months fast approaching, there are more days than not that I would rather stay indoors, which limits my options in regards to exercise. Knowledge is my second anti-drug. I like learning about all kinds of different things, and Mahalo helps me to do that. I like to read, research, and then also write about topics that interest me. Writing is not just a career to me, it is also a passion, and it is what helps me to stay sane.

Writing isn't always about learning, though. I enjoy creative writing and journaling as well. Some would argue that creative writing is still learning through intrapersonal communication, and I would agree, but there is a whole lot less research involved. I like to talk walks in the woods with my notebook in hand, and I will occasionally stop and write about something that comes to my head.

Nature is another one of my anti-drugs. I love spending time outdoors. Hiking, fishing, cycling, or just sitting outside in the sun have a profound effect on my mental clarity and help to relieve stress. Naturally, when exercise and nature are combined, it is like the ultimate catharsis for me.

Oh, and family get-togethers can be very stressful for me, so I try to avoid them as much a possible. That doesn't mean that I don't spend time with my family, but I prefer to instead visit family one-on-one or at smaller family functions rather than overwhelm myself.

Sleep can be both a friend and an enemy. Studies have proven that excessive amounts of sleep can lead to depression. On the other hand, not enough sleep can lead to anxiety and other physical symptoms. In this respect, it is all about balance and listening to your body. When I am tried, I will sleep. When I am feeling like I can't get to sleep and there is still more to be done, I will keep working or find something else to do. My circadian rhythms have alway been off-kilter, and there are times that I work in the middle of the night and times that I work during the day. I have struggled for the longest time to find balance here, but it is seemingly impossible for me. Instead, I prefer to relish life's natural chaos.

The primary point of sleep for me is that I rarely get enough... and then I did a drug that got me even less than my insomnia allowed. I try to sleep because I will likely never get enough at this point unless I force myself too. It's almost a constant battle because to be honest, I actually hate sleep.

I have all the normal ones, like God, my Children and my Marriage, however I also go to school or take on really big research projects. These give me a huge high that you would never believe. I like to find the answer to a problem and write about it and have people ask me questions about it, that is why I became a content writer, so that I could do just that, so that every single day I could feed my addictions. And this one won't make me lose my family, cost me money or make me get sick. How cool is that.

family gatherings, A cold glass of white wine, learning new things on the computer, reading a great thriller! these are just a few of my anti-drugs. And a occasional cigarette. ( This is one of my guilty ones!)

No, I always have my relaxing time for myself, not around the kids. There is a time and place for everything! Where I live, wine is the norm., with meals etc. But for that lovely cold one as an extra, I have that on my own time. It's great to be alive!

Its okay. I have my guilty anti-drugs too. It's more about accountability than doing them. No excuses- are they hurting you or your loved ones? If its yes, then it needs to go. In my case, the caffeine and nicotine is to supplement being without something worse. Drinking is more a social relaxation for me

Those are not drugs, though they can be addictions. I suffer from an attack of wanting many video games, and answering/commenting on Mahalo all the time. :o)

LOL
3 out of 6 of your "anti-drugs" are drugs themselves.
So i'm going to assume you mean illegal substances. Though i find them to all be in the same category.

Mine would be close friends, great food (home cooking), video games and love making.
Writing and music sometimes helps, sometimes makes things worse.

definitely those who use it is a big deterrent.

I do agree... half of my 'anti-drugs' are addictions in their own right. I can say to my credit that I am not addicted to the worst of those three (alcohol) and that it's more to the point of going out with a buddy of mine and having a good time while taking in some live music in some of Dallas's top venues. But you got me on the Sunkist and cigarette addiction.

f1osof2's Avatar

i didn't know Sunkist had caffeine.
Typically orange drinks don't have it.

i double checked it, you're right.
... you learn something new...

My anti-drugs include spending time with my family, more specifically family movie or TV night. Garage sales and great finds REALLY give me a natural high. Unwinding from the day in a hot, relaxing bath is something I cherish on a daily basis. Watching my kids laugh, doing special for someone in need, playing spades, watching my favorite TV shows including Housewives, Big Brother, Cut Throat, Survivor and Apprentice give me pleasure. Working (sometimes), having sex and sleep are also anti-drugs!

Often my kids will find me singing and or dancing (usually at the same time) and ask if I am on something and my answer is usually "I am high on life." Don't get me wrong, lately I have not been high on life enough.

Due to a recent health issue, I have been unable to eat and so all the past pleasures of fast food, mainly McDonalds, are a thing of the past. I also used to really enjoy smoking which is now still cut down to 5 cigarettes a day, SO I am trying to find other things that give me pleasure. I guess it is a process and life will get easier soon :)
