what is xylitol?
Looking for products that only have xylitol as its sweetner. Our bodies produce 8-12 grams of xylitol a day - it is natural. I have read form the American Dental Association Web site that if you get 6-8 grams of xylitol a day, over a 3 dose period and exposure of 8 minutes each time, it reduces the bacteria that causes tooth decay - the outcome is a 60-80% reduction in cavities. It has a low glycemic index so it does not casue obesity and is approved for diabetics. It has the same sweetness as sugar. Most health food store owners have never heard of it.

Xylitol is produced commercially from trees such as birch and other hardwood trees.
Xylitol is found naturally in foods such as
raspberries
strawberries
yellow plums
endive
mushrooms
However I was unable to locate an extensive list of foods that naturally contain xylitol. I would say if you are interested in lowering your sugar intake, reducing calories, and reducing cavities you should maintain a healthy daily diet of fresh fruits & vegetables and skip the artificially sweetened candies, cookies, and ice creams.
Xylitol has also been associated with IBS and other stomach problems.
