War and Peace is about an aristocratic Russian family set at the time when Napoleon invaded Russia and there was war and hardship for all Russians. People have a fascination with the doings of the rich and the nobility. Its quite a long book so to read it you would probably need to stay indoors for a while. There is a lot of philosophic discussion in it as Tolstoy had an interest in Philosophy and Historiography. It was published approx 60 years after the events it describes. Historically it details the Battle of Borodino and its aftermath. This battle inflicted heavy casualties on both sides. Prince Andrei is hero thought the book has a large cast. Natasha is one of the main female characters. The philosophy make it seem ponderous if you read it when young. A similar russian book is Solzhenitsyn's August 1914 or Doctor Zhivago by Pasternak.. Leo Tolstoy's over famous book is Anna Karenina.
