The Department of Medicine is the largest department at the University of Southern California. It is a major center of medical research, education and patient care that was established in 1885. The department ranks 8th in ophthalmology, 16th in urology, 20th in neurosurgery and neurology, 28th in pulmonology, 29th in gynecology, and 31st in orthopedics in the U.S.. U.S. News and World Report ranks the department at 34 in research among the top 135 U.S. medical schools.

The department has also been an innovator in the medical field, with numerous accomplishments in its history. Primary examples include faculty members developed the first academic Department of Emergency Medicine in the nation in 1969, discovered the first cancer-causing gene in 1970, established Los Angeles County’s Cancer Surveillance Program in 1972, developed the world’s first double lobar lung transplant from living-related donors in 1993, developed the first retinal implant in 2002, and created the first HIV-resistant blood stem cells in 2010.

The department of Medicine, part of the Keck School of Medicine, is the largest department in USC. Established in 1885, the USC College of Medicine became the region’s first medical school and the second professional school founded at USC. That same year, led by its first dean Joseph Pomeroy Widney, M.D., the school entered into an affiliation with the Los Angeles County Hospital-a relationship that still exists today-enabling students to train in one of the largest teaching hospitals in the nation.
