What is your definition of a "white lie"?

For example: A friend has recently bought an outfit and asks your opinion. You know that she is proud of her purchase and is eager to show it off. If the outfit looks okay on her but is just not your style, or if it's not something you would normally see her wearing, you would politely tell her a "white lie" and say that you think the outfit is great. If, however, the outfit is highly unflattering and would be an embarrassment for your friend to wear out, saying that the outfit is great would only cause harm to your friend. This would be a full blown lie and could lead to disaster and distrust in your friendship.

M$An example would be telling someone that you have no clue what is in the wrapped package for them, even though you know you do.
Another example would be to say teasingly that you know nothing about any surprise, when you really do know but do not want to spoil the fun.
Some might consider telling your children the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus are white lies even though they are based on tradition and meant not as lies but as happy events and celebrations centered around lore and even some historical fact.
A white lie is not meant to harm, avoid getting in trouble or to manipulate for a negative gain.
