what is twitpocalypse?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Twitpocalypse refers to an issue that will occur again soon. Essentially, many third-party developers store tweet status IDs as 32-bit unsigned integers. The limit for 32-bit unsigned integers is 4,294,967,295. When the tweet with an ID of that number or higher comes around, some Twitter clients may not be able to properly handle it.

All Twitter clients & services that use 32-bit unsigned integers to store tweet IDs will have to upgrade to 64-bit integers before the Twitpocalypse. Currently, the Twitpocalypse is scheduled for sometime near late September.

In short: some Twitter clients you use may not work properly if they don't get updated by late September (or perhaps sooner).

For more information on the Twitpocalypse, check out the Twitpocalypse page here on Mahalo.
