What is this short story? When I was in the seventh grade (in 1990), my class read a story about mice. I can only recall a few details...

I remember that in a large community of mice that at least one had fallen ill, so another went out to secure some medicine. The medicine was aspirin, and as the mouse attempted to bring it back to the community, it dissolved on his tongue and that mouse died. There may have been a second attempt to secure medicine, in addition to some mazes. This story was awesome but I never finished it because I caught mononucleosis and missed the last three weeks of school. Be careful who you kiss.

This is the closest short story I could find about a mouse and aspirin:

The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary

It was wrote about the right time (first published in 1965) however the story differs from your memory.

You can read a good description of the book by clicking on the link below.

It's not really a short story, but perhaps it was Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Mrs. Frisby is a mouse who is trying to find medicine for her son.

Hi. I was a huge Beverly Cleary fan when I was in high school. From the details you've provided, I would have to say I think you're talking about "The Mouse and the Motorcycle."

Ralph S. Mouse does go in search of aspirin, but it's for the young boy who owns him. It's not technically listed as a short story. It's a fiction novel for young kids, so it is fairly short (176 pages with large print).

To see if this book matches the story you remember, you can preview it on Google Books - http://books.google.com/books?id=020vfe93e3YC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_navlinks_s#v=onepage&q=&f=false

I appreciate everyone's responses. I took the advice here and bought NIMH and The Mouse and the Motorcycle. I am a few chapters into NIMH and am not certain this is it. I glanced through The Mouse and the Motorcycle, which I will read next, but I'm not sure that is it, either. The mice in the story that I read were not so anthropomorphic as these mice. Either way, I look forward to reading these books. I am also looking online for the original text book from that time.
