What is the Zietgeist Movement?

Is it a cult? A cover for a hate group? Are they just extreme crazy people?
I'm trying to understand them and the Venus Project since it was mentioned that Jared Loughner was obsessed with them.

What is your take on this group?

The Zeitgeist Movement and the Venus Project are actually a utopian movement that has nothing to do with anti-semitism. It is often confused with the Zionist conspiracies due to the name, and the fact that some major anti-semitists have become followers of the project.

In fact, a very close friend of mine who is a Rabbi is a major supporter of both the Venus Project and the Zeitgeist Movement. He has stated that since the Venus Project and the Zeitgeist Movement constitute some fringe ideas (a utopian society group usually is fringe) it has a tendency to pull in other fringe thought groups like racists.

As my friend has explained to me, a good representation of where the Venus Project would go would be a society that was more reliant on scientific methodology than on sweat. He explained that national resources would not be owned by one government or business, but shared where the need was. It would completely change the economic system in the world.

As for the research that I have done for a few projects, the actual Zeitgeist Movement and Venus Project appear that they would lead more towards some of the scientific aspects of novels like "Brave New World" and "Player Piano." While the negative aspects of these socieities do not appear to be present in their plans, the aspects of a science-based society do.

The entire world would be unified under one common goal - the advancement of science and technology. There would be no need for currency, governments, or even bosses. Humans would be around to research and machines would be around to do the actual work.

Any utopian society is going to draw a few different types of people - geniouses, the deranged, the forgotten, and hated. Judging the entire group on a portion of fringe people inside of the group is really the wrong thing to do. Since the name of the group has been given a negative connotation due to fringe people inside of the group, many media outlets are against publicizing anything good about the group in general.

The Zeitgeist Movement exists fundamentally as the communication and activist arm of an organization called The Venus Project. In some ways it could be categorized as a "Sustainability Movement", in part. The basic pursuit of The Movement is to begin a transition into a new, sustainable social design called a “Resource-Based Economy”. This term was first coined by Jacque Fresco of the Venus Project and refers to an economic structure based exclusively on strategic resource management, as the starting point for all decisions.
