What is the word Grammy short for or mean?

What does Grammy Award mean?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Originally it was the "Gramophone" award, established in 1958. It's kind of funny, because by 1958 the gramophone was long gone, but the trophy was made in the likeness of the machine, not a phonograph player.
The Grammy is an annual award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United State recognizing excellence in a multitude of categories.

It's short for Gramophone, and they used to be called the Gramophone Awards.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonograph <-- ("gramophone" is the British English version of "phonograph"; the awards look like phonographs, don't they?)

Do you mean Grammy as in the award? It's a shortened version of the word gramophone which was a device that played old fashioned records (The show would be called then 'The Gramaphone Awards'). Gramaphone though is actually just the British English term used for the American English word 'Phonograph'.
