This is a deceptively tricky question. The screen resolution of an iPad is 1024 x 768... BUT, because the iPad screen can be rotated, wallpapers should be set to 1024 x 1024 with the realization that the top/bottom or left and right might be cut off with a rotation of the screen.
Sooo, your total image size should be 1024 x 1024, but anything "interesting" should be 768 x 768 centered.
