What is the vertical protrusion on the bow section of some types of submarine? It does not look like sonar.

Many submarines, such as the Los Angeles and Virginia class attack submarines, have two visible protrusions on their bow, the sonar dome and the bow buoyancy tank.
The bow buoyancy tank is used to make the bow of the submarine rise first. This is accomplished when water is blown out of this forward ballast tank.

I do not feel that this answer goes far enough, or is even necessarily correct, according to what I have asked. Yes, I know about sonar DOMES and bow buoyancy tanks, but I did say it is a VERTICAL protrusion on the bow which I am wondering about. I should probably have said that it is ON TOP of the bow. Look at the Collins Class sub's and you will see it. It does not have the appearance of sonar, and certainly is not a dome. Thankyou.
Now that you have specified that you were referring to the Australian Collins class sub, I have looked closely at the Collins class subs, I now see what you are referring to, the vertical protrusion is on the actual foredeck of the sub.
It was described to me as a sonar array, but I am not entirely convinced as the source lacked technical credibility in that field. I am searching for the schematics or diagram of either the foredeck or nose of the Collins class subs to verify this for you. I will keep you posted here.
