What is the ugliest car ever marketed by an American car company?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Too bad too because it did have some interesting "lifestyle" features like the attachable tent on the back.
Favorite quote from the attached video (4:07) "I don't care how pretty the interior is, the outside is whooped"
And a couple more excellent quotes I found from the attached Time article on the 50 Worst cars:
"This car could not have been more instantly hated if it had a Swastika tattoo on its forehead"
and
"it emerged that the Aztek design had been fiddled with, fussed over, cost-shaved and otherwise compromised until the tough, cool-looking concept had been reduced to a bulky, plastic-clad mess."

This car was released by Ford Motors from 1957 - 1960 and is known mostly because of its failures. Not only it has an ugly design, it was also not that appealing to the public though it was released earlier during the times when cars aren't really as eye poppers as they are now. It's also released during the time of recession which means, it didn't earn that much. The name "Edsel" also didn't become catchy. Lastly, when it comes to performance, Ford Edsel has lots of mechanical flaws.
Anyway, it's a candidate for the worst car ever... not just the ugliest. T.T
Okay, I know it wasn't fair for older cars so I should also include a modern ugly car. XD I find Aztec ugly... but since it's given already, here's another pick: The 2005-2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible.

M$Hey no prob's lol
It's still an ugly car eh!
Err, didn't I already mention the Edsel??
I'm sure I did, oh yeah, just one post above, lol.
Edsel radiator was too small. Car overheated.
Oops... sorry @siaynoq... Anyway, I just gave a few updates and mentioned another car anyway. Sorry, really. T.T
The above model is not the exact one but a very close representation. So for personal reasons and genuine distaste for the less than stylish lines of these jalopies, I nominate the 1985 Ford Escort Station Wagon as the ugliest car ever marketed by an American car company.

M$Definitely a strong contender. :-)
My mind went immediately to the '70s AMC cars, but in looking at them again I had to concede that, at the very least, they had a personality.
A friend of mine had one in college that was beige (if I remember correctly) with one red door (that part I remember correctly). It was quite a sight to behold. But the Escort just lacked any style whatsoever. The Aztek on the other hand was TRYING to be stylish.

But, there are few other surveys which ranked Pontiac Aztek as the ugliest car ever.

As far as my own opinion is concerned, I would vote AMC Pacer as the ugliest car. It looks much uglier than the Pontiac Aztek.
Opinions may differ, however.
Thanks

M$Yeah @sjaynoq! You are right! There are so many. But I would vote for AMC Pacer as the ugliest. Thanks
Hey good find. So many ugly cars to choose from eh!
Surely the ugliest car ever made?
Also the greatest 'failure' of a car. Read this wiki article

It's the 'horse collar grill that does it! Normally liked to a womens private parts, nobody wanted to be seen driving one of these!

M$the AMC Pacer
---quote---
The fishbowl on wheels. Upon its arrival in 1975, American journalists tried to make the best of a bad situation by complimenting its “very modern styling” and “ample passenger room”. The British press, however, were less polite when The Motor declared, “We Tested the AMC Pacer – And We Wish We Hadn’t” and The Independent wrote that the Pacer “looked horrible, drove badly, and ate money.” Despite being powered by a paltry 95hp inline six cylinder engine, the Pacer still managed to average an observed fuel economy of less than 18mpg. Truly, it was not Detroit’s finest hour.

M$Honda Element = Japanese Aztek lite... minus the fancy grill work.
And yes, the Pacer falls into the category of "so ugly it's cute"
yeah, those are butt ugly for sure!
as for modern cars ... i think the honda element, with it's whimsically excessive use of battleship grey plastic panels as decorative detail, deserves to be recognized in this conversation :-)

M$-quote-
"You probably saw this one coming after we took on the Pacer. That car had the round version of “ugly” down pat, so we’ll let the Gremlin corner the market on “angular ugliness.” That’s because in reality, the Gremlin was simply an AMC Hornet rudely and awkwardly hacked in two, creating a mutant hatchback. Famously, it was also introduced on April Fool’s Day, which didn’t help things any. Unsurprisingly, creating a Levi’s edition slathered with denim upholstery wasn’t effective, because honestly, nothing could cover up the ugly on this little monster."

M$A Levi edition was available ... how quirky is that? :-)
But they do such nice wheelies!
Warning: horridly loud and awful audio
Can't believe no one has said the Gremlin.....also has the ugliest name of any car!

M$the lines on this car just confuse the eyes, and at 225" long its a hog!
ad in the color choices that it came in and it just screams ugly ;-)

M$To top that off they soon created the inflated car look with the Pacer, a big bubble on wheels with 1950s engineering, then had the gall to call it the car of tomorrow. AMC went to the big junkyard in the sky soon after.

M$That one would win in a "world" contest, but @balinesecat is looking for an American car of questionable beauty.
That's not ugly. And if you open it up to foreign cars you can find some real "winners".
I'd qualify the Yugo, as it was marketed to the American public. A contender, but I think the Aztek is still the one to beat so far.
I started a new thread for foreign cars:

:-)

awww but you can pimp out the aztek and make it look "sweet" (had to post this picture since it somehow makes the aztek look even worse).
I'd almost forgotten about the Aztek! Strong contender indeed ... and the video is extra hilarious :-)
This is the first thing that came to my mind. YUCK!
Also please note that the orange one in the picture is AFTER the emergency re-design to help out with the looks.
I kind of think it looks like a Pontiac Grand Am that has been partially swallowed by some sort of robotic Boa Constrictor
This is the first one that came to mind for me as well. My theory is that the design process involved tequila shots, modeling software, and a dare.
And.. yes there is an and, the Aztek had a tent that could pop out of the rear when the door was open. I wholeheartedly agree this to be a true contender/
I'll have to confirm with @buddawiggi, but I believe this fellow might have been one of the original designers, penned on a hotel well in ketchup while spending time in Las Vegas.
