What is causing East verses West tensions?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I don't know that it is actually referred to as "the Taiwan Question", but the status of Taiwan is a major issue in international relations, esp those between China and the US.

Basically, China maintains that Taiwan is part of China, and aims in due course to have it become a normal part of Chinese territory.

On the other hand Taiwan maintains that it is an independent country, and parted company with mainland China after the communists came to power.

Some states recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, and others don't.

In keeping with our one China policy, the U.S. does not support Taiwan independence, but it does support Taiwan's membership in appropriate international organizations, such as the World Trade Organization, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, and the Asian Development Bank, where statehood is not a requirement for membership. In addition, the U.S. supports Taiwan's meaningful participation in appropriate international organizations where its membership is not possible.

Will you define saber rattling? Does that include nuclear escalation scenarios or is that rhetoric part of the saber rattling?

China does some saber rattling from time to time, but hopefully matters will be resolved peacefully in time. It's a good sign that serious conflicts have been avoided so far.

Obviously the world and the US would take any aggression very seriously, and Taiwan also has a self-defense capability that is not to be underestimated.
