Hi @putty! Stomach flu is also known as gastroenteritis or gastric flu. This is a condition where there is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that involves the stomach and small intestine causing acute or sudden diarrhea.
flu is more common in infants because their digestive system is still weak and weak immune system. Infants who are fed poorly are often at risk of stomach flu. A child who have this condition can be lethargic, suffer lack of sleep, has a low grade fever, discolored skin, sunken fontanels, sunken eyeballs, darkened eye circles, glassy eyes and will develop ultimately shock.
Prevention:
Gastroenteritis can be prevented through immunization. A Rotavirus vaccine was developed between 2000 and 2009 which decreased the number of diarrhea cases that are caused by rotavirus in the U.S. There are also different types of vaccine that are available for Salmonella typhi and Vibrio cholera and can be given to people who has plans in traveling at-risk areas.
Doctors also recommend that food should be properly cooked and stored to prevent stomach flu. Hands should be washed thoroughly before and after eating and using the bathroom. Viral gastroenteritis is highly contagious so it is best to avoid going to crowded places like markets, theaters, or shopping malls especially for those who have weak resistance. It is also advised to bleach soiled laundry and household items to prevent spread of bacteria.
