What is the silliest member of the animal kingdom?

Pictures will really help me here.
Tip for best answer: M$4.80
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am going to go with Anteaters. Seriously here, people. Have you ever stopped to notice how strange they are?

Forget the size of their schnozz, anteaters have a tongue that is over 2 FEET LONG, and looks like a spaghetti noodle! Did you know that it can jab it's tongue in and out of an anthill as much as 150 times PER MINUTE? Freaky.

And this oddball doesn't even walk on its paws! It curls up its claws under it paws and walks on those. That would be like us balling up our toes and just walking on them!

Plus, these guys - who consume as many as 30,00 ants (or termites) per day - have no teeth!

Definitely one of nature's strangest creations.

Although not intentionally silly, I am going to say the Bird of Paradise for its silly-looking and hilarious mating dance. This clip is from Planet Earth, and it cracks me up every single time I see it. I feel bad for him in the end, though. :(

Jellyfish!!

While not exactly the silliest of actors, they are, in and of themselves silly by design.

I mean, WHY? What was God DOING on that day when he decides, "You know what? I'm going to take this blob of jelly, add stinging tendrils to it and then put it in the ocean. It's just going to float around and... well, maybe some of them can move, but not much."
"Well, what does it do?" asked one of the Angels a few weeks later looking at this weird blob floating in the water stinging fish and slowly digesting them. "I mean, why?"
"I don't know - seemed like a good idea at the time," said God...

The silliest animal in the entire animal kingdom is unequivocally the duck-billed platypus. It is like a walking paradox.

It's a very strange looking animal. It looks like an animal made of the parts of several different specis. It lives on the eastern coast of Australia. It has the bill of a duck, the tail of a beaver, and feet like an otter. It is one of only five mammals that lay eggs as opposed to giving birth to live young.

Wildebeest (also known as Gnu).

When you see them trying to cross a river, you’ll understand why. It’s chaotic! You have the impression they are crazy and many are eaten by crocodiles, others drown or can’t find a way.

It happens because: “Although it is commonly assumed that this is simply a frenzy and that the wildebeest cross blindly, recent research has shown that a herd of gnu possesses what is known as a ‘swarm intelligence’, whereby the animals systematically explore and overcome the obstacle as one”.

Anyways, their individual intelligence is a mess. Poor gnus!

http://www.strategystew.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/dodo-bird.jpg
...was... the Dodo use to be the silliest bird in the planet, perhaps the silliest animal ever. But, as you should know, Darwin’s law did not permit the evolution of stupid animals. Always giving the advantage to the best fit, the stronger, and the fastest or smartest animal, thus cleaning the genetic pool on a constant basis.

Dodos became extinct because they were too slow, could not fly and did no have natural enemies in their unique habitat, the islands of Mauritius, Reunion and Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. They lived in this Garden of Eden with no predators in sight and did not developed skills to run from a menace, thus when the first Portuguese, Dutch or French whalers and pirates arrived on the island during the XVII century, Dodos became an easy prey and were decimated in a matter of a few decades.

The dodo was well adapted to its habitat. Humans wiped them out; but, humans can wipe out any animal and have done so to many.

I am going to say monkeys. They are playful, put on a show for the audience and do lots of silly things, like make faces.

People even call their kids silly monkeys when they are being goofy or silly.

Here are two video and some pictures.

Since I am past my editing time, I would like to add ape to my answer. Monkeys are very silly, but as my pictures and video suggests, apes are silly too.

albanian's Avatar

Those are apes not monkeys. If you count them you might as well count people.

brandy76's Avatar

Since some people are very critical, I will revise my answer to apes, monkeys and gorillas to cover several primates. And some humans are pretty silly, so maybe I should change my answer to humans.

Growing up along the Pacific Coast, I've seen many seals and sea lions.

Since they are so inquisitive and curious, they automatically fall under the category of silly.

To be a silly animal, you first have to be smart.

Seals have my silly seal of approval!

Some stills from Monty Python would make your answer very convincing.

Although, I don't fully understand what the asker is after. It's a shame Mahalo does not allow asking for clarification by commenting on a question directly.
