What is the significance of Ramadan?

I have an Egyptian friend who is a a physiotherapist and I admire the discipline he has with regards to his religion. He told me that everyday before the sun set he has to take a bath and after that he will bow down and pray (facing Mecca) Through him I was able to know a little about Islam for he shared with me a lot of their religious practices. We were colleagues for just a few months though since he transferred to another city. I still have a lot of questions about Islam particularly Ramadan. Why do Muslim religiously observe this? What is its significance to Islam?

Ramadan is a very significant month for all believers of the Muslim faith. Ramadan is the 9th month of Islamic calendar in which the holy book Qur’an was reveled to Prophet Mohammed. Typically, during this month Muslims are refrained from eating from dawn to sunset. The origin and the reason why Muslims observe this is, according to wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramadan

QUOTE

In the Qu'ran, God proclaims that "fasting has been written down (as obligatory) upon you, as it was upon those before you". According to the earliest hadith, this refers to the Jewish practice of fasting on Yom Kippur.

END QUOTE

The Month of Ramadan is not only to observe fast and pray, but also to enjoy the essence of Islam. It teaches the Muslims to better discipline themselves, to sacrifice and contain their worldly desires, at the same time it teaches them to love their fellow Muslims and to help those in need, it also fosters their appreciation toward what they have, be they Muslim or not. It is a very humbling experience for the Muslims.

For the Muslims, Ramadan is also a time for opportunity for self-purification. Fasting is a way for them to experience the suffering of the less fortunate ones and to move closer towards God and ask for repentance.

In some Muslims, eating during inappropriate times during the Ramadan can be a crime. In Algeria 6 people were even prosecuted for this and send to jail for four years.

Thank you.

The significance is to teach the Muslims about modesty, spirituality and patience. It's sort of like their version of Lent. It's actually quite fascinating. You should read about it.
