The MacBook Air is a limited use machine. The fact that it is extremely expensive and does not integrate an optical drive makes the price stand out. If you have ever used one it is apparent how slow the machine actually is. And to top it off the hinges as well as the usb port door is known to break. It's overall a very low-end machine but is very light. You are better off buying a new macbook as they are slightly thicker but the benefits are far better. It's less expensive, more powerful, more storage available, user replaceable battery, powerful chip set. The trade off is the size and weight.

I have had the black macbook, macbook air, unibody macbook 13 and new macbook pro 13. Each one of them was purchased with the highest specs including ram (well - except that I didn't upgrade the 4gb of ram in the pro).

Here are my thoughts on key problems with each unit...

- black macbook, screen was dull, washed out. edge of the unit below the keyboard was very sharp, tended to slit wrists

- macbook air...i wanted to love this thing. i travel alot and work in 2 different offices. single usb was a bit of a problem but i could live with it. then the headphone jack wouldn't fit high end ear pieces like the schures, almost a dealbreak but i bought yet another apple adapter. the dongle for ethernet, i was pretty sure i left dongles behind but got another one. then the fan ran like a 747 taking off and nothing i could do would stop it, and this was with only mail and safari open...that was it, right to craigs list.

macbook unibody - probably could have lived with this thought i was bit disappointed with the battery life. and then the pro came along

macbook pro 13 - very pleased with this unit though i do find the fan running more than on the 13 inch macbook. more pleased with the battery life though never get near apple's quoted timeframes. sd card slot is helpful as is firewire. all in all this is the strongest of the units that i have had

next - another air as soon as i get more ram, less fan and better battery life.

now i have to unpack the imac 27 quad core, only hoping that i don't have a flash problem or cracked screen!

I am not really sure what type of answer you are looking for here, but I can say as a MacBook Air user, I love it. It's perfect for someone like me who does not need the dozens of USB ports or an optical drive, but still has the speed and portability to be my everyday driver.
